Supervisory Librarian (School Support Engagement)

Job Summary This position is located in the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) within Public Services, Youth and Family Services. DCPL creates environments that invite reading, learning, and community discussion, providing resources that support lifelong learning for all. In this role, the Supervisory Librarian (School Support Engagement) will develop, manage, and implement initiatives that strengthen partnerships between DCPL and local schools, educational organizations, and community groups. The goal is to expand library services for students, educators, and families, ensuring alignment with K‑12 academic needs. Responsibilities Build and maintain relationships with local school districts, principals, teachers, and administrators to promote DCPL’s educational resources. Collaborate with school staff to design and implement strategies that meet the needs of students, educators, and families. Design and deliver library programs for students and schools, such as school visits, library orientations, homework help, reading initiatives, and after‑school programs. Support teachers with curriculum‑based resources, including books, digital tools, and specialized collections aligned with school curricula and educational standards. Develop family‑engagement initiatives that foster a love of reading and support student success, including workshops on homework help, literacy development, and college readiness. Cultivate partnerships with community‑based organizations and after‑school programs to extend library services to underserved communities. Provide training and professional development for educators and school staff on how to use library resources and digital tools. Collect and analyze data on outreach activities, program participation, and impact to evaluate effectiveness and inform improvement. Collaborate with other library staff, especially in Youth Services, to ensure cohesive planning and delivery of services. Oversee resources and materials aimed at school‑age youth, ensuring relevance, accessibility, and alignment with educational standards. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited college or university. Five years of specialized experience in community outreach, partnering with schools and community organizations, including at least three years at a managerial level overseeing programs and staff. Expertise in early childhood literacy development, child development principles, and best practices in early literacy education. Professional knowledge of K–12 education systems, curricula, educational technology, digital learning tools, and library resources that support student learning. Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, manage a team of staff and volunteers, coordinate complex responsibilities, and maintain effective relationships with agency staff, school administrators, teachers, and community stakeholders. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage families, caregivers, community partners, and present information clearly in group settings. Demonstrated ability to design innovative and engaging early literacy programs. Proficiency in assessing and evaluating programs using qualitative and quantitative methods to drive improvement and demonstrate impact. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines. Knowledge of agency program goals and objectives, timelines, and interdepartmental relationships within DCPL. Analytical skills to identify, assess, and report on activities, issues, and problems, recommending appropriate solutions. Physical ability to lift 25 pounds and handle library materials in various formats. Frequent travel to schools, community events, and other outreach locations within the District of Columbia. Eligible to perform relevant work at the next lower grade level of CS 12 for a minimum of one year; incumbents cannot be serving a probationary period (applicable to District government employees only). Preferred Qualifications Advanced Spanish language proficiency or native Spanish speaker. Licenses & Certifications None Working Conditions & Environment The work is performed in an office setting and will require travel between DCPL’s 26 branch locations and schools throughout the District of Columbia.
