Job Description

This position involves manual work in the custodial care and upkeep of County buildings and premises. The employee performs cleaning and minor maintenance tasks, ensuring proper methods, materials, and equipment are used to maintain cleanliness and safety. Work is performed under close supervision following an established routine.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Scrubs, mops, waxes, and polishes floors.
• Dusts and polishes furniture.
• Washes windows, woodwork, and fixtures.
• Cleans and maintain facility restrooms.
• Vacuums carpeted areas.
• Perform other related cleaning tasks as assigned.
• Moves office furniture and equipment.
• Replaces burned out light bulbs, replenishes restroom supplies, and assists in making simple repairs to buildings and equipment as required.
• Sweeps and cleans walkways, mows lawns, rakes leaves, and generally assists in keeping outside premises in an orderly condition.

Education and Experience

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of any level of primary or secondary education that did not result in the awarding of a high school diploma or an equivalency diploma.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability

• Some knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in janitorial work.
• Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Physical Requirements

• Physical strength and ability to push, pull, and lift various pieces of equipment and furniture up to a weight of 75 pounds.
• Perform a variety of routine manual tasks in the care, cleaning and limited maintenance of buildings and equipment.
• Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.

Certifications or Licenses Required

• Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable under Madison County's risk management policy if the position involves driving. (Not all Custodial positions require driving duties.)

Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.

Employee Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule *Employer contribution percentage is set by the Retirement Systems of Alabama and changes annually.

Employee Clinic: Madison County employees and dependents over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee and dependent must be enrolled in Madison County's health insurance plan as their primary coverage.
