Position Summary

Gain hands-on, paid experience in youth development and nonprofit programming while helping girls understand what it means to be a girl-leader who makes a difference in the world! As a paid intern, you will guide a group of girls in 6-week, after-school troops for girls in grades K-6, providing pre-planned curriculum at each site to help girls participate in age-appropriate activities focused on exploring their community and their world. 

As a Girl Scouts in ACTION Facilitator Intern, you will be a role model to youth in your community, fostering a positive learning environment, and teaching exciting lessons in STEAM, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Life and Outdoor Skills. Girl Scouts of Wisconsin-Badgerland will provide facilitator training, supplies, and a paid hourly wage, along with mentorship from the School Engagement Manager, to help you lead fun-filled, educational after-school troops.

Job Type: Hourly/Non-Exempt
Salary: $18 per hour
Expected hours: 4-15 hours per week
Location: Madison, WI

Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan and implement engaging and enriching activities for youth (ages 5 – 13) according to the Girl Scouts Leadership Experience (GSLE) educational goals and themes, under the guidance of the School Engagement Manager.
• Develop positive relationships with youth in the program, parents, and school staff.
• Ensure required paperwork is completed by girls, families, and/or site staff, including daily student attendance, registration forms, outcomes of surveys, and other reporting documents.
• Deliver informational presentations for girls and adults through identified sites to help recruit girls and adult volunteers.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with local schools, parent organizations, and community organizations.
• Submit lesson plans for program activities for each session in advance, with review and feedback from program staff.
• Participate in end-of-session evaluations, including a reflection on personal learning goals.
• Work within the established budget and maintain expenses and receipts as needed.
• Belief in the mission and values of Girl Scouting; be willing to subscribe to the principles expressed in the Promise and Law and Wisconsin Badgerland Girl Scouts mission, vision, and values. 

Education or Experience 

• Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a high school, college, or university program (Education, Communications, Social Work, or related field preferred).
• 1+ years of experience working with school-aged children, at summer camp or after-school programs, preferred but not required for interns.
• Other combinations of education and relevant experience that demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position will be considered.
• Ability to teach simple concepts to engage youth in Girl Scouts activities.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
• Demonstrated ability and sensitivity working with youth and persons of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with cloud-based platforms and Salesforce preferred.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented with a bias towards execution and action.
• Eager to build project management skills and operate with an entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented mindset.
• A proactive team player willing to pitch in at all levels while also learning to hold a big-picture, systems-thinking mindset.
• Exceptional written and verbal communicator.
• Strong work ethic with a high degree of curiosity and learning orientation; operates with a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and discretion.
• Spanish/Bilingual skills a plus.
• Be or become a registered member of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America; have a working knowledge of Girl Scout philosophy and programming and be committed to the Girl Scout mission. Prior Girl Scout experience is not required. 

Internship Terms

• This is a paid internship, compensated at an hourly rate consistent with the Girl Scouts in ACTION Facilitator wage scale.
• Paid time for required training, site preparation, and completion of program paperwork.
• Mileage reimbursement for approved site travel per organizational policy. 

Other Requirements

• At least 18 years of age.
• Must be able to frequently work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
• Anticipated time away from office is 75%.
• Possess a valid drivers’ License and proof of insurance.
• Must be able to work both in an office setting and independently off-site.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to withstand:

1. Must be able to work in an outside environment, where you have the ability to walk/hike daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
2. Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
3. Operate office equipment manually.
4. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds at times.
