Job Description Patient Population: The patient population served can be all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public. Position Summary: Under the general direction of the Unit Director, Clinical Manager and Charge Nurse, the Registered Nurse (RN) independently provides holistic, individualized care using the Nursing Process for patients routinely seen on the unit. Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical competency, nursing judgment, teaching skills, and a commitment to improving the quality of patient care. Independently performs general and unit-specific clinical skills. The RN contributes to the Sierra View Medical Center Department of Patient Care Services and the Nursing profession in a positive manner. The RN is responsible for the assessment, treatment, and nursing care delivery appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs. Possesses knowledge of growth and development and has an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups. Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act (Gov’t. Code §§ 3100, 3102). Education / Training / Experience Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Basic computer skills. Licensure / Certifications BLS ACLS PALS MICN (must complete within 2 years of employment or prior to assignment as Charge RN or Resource RN) CPI (must obtain within one year of assignment to department) Responsibilities and Essential Functions Assess, treat, and provide care appropriate to the ages of the patients served; interpret patient needs and understand growth and development. Utilize holistic assessment skills, recognizing subtle, covert or abnormal signs and symptoms. Identify nursing diagnoses and interdependent nursing problems and select applicable nursing care standards. Ensure Care Plan is specific and unique to the individual patient utilizing Interdependent Nursing Standards. Perform nursing care safely according to established clinical policy, procedure and standards. Ensure nursing care aligns with care plans and patient needs. Evaluate and communicate the effectiveness of the Plan of Care, recommend future care. Communicate patient status changes to the physician or health care team. Adhere to Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals. Maintain documentation compliance with Hospital policies. Demonstrate knowledge of role through adherence to NPSGs. Understand interactions of drugs used in combination for patients with multi-system problems. Complete required unit specific performance criteria checklist. Apply Infection Prevention skills for central lines and indwelling Foley catheters. Report quality or Risk Management issues through appropriate channels. Maintain current knowledge of health care trends affecting unit practice. Uphold Nursing Practice Act and ANA Code of Ethics (9 principles). Provide evidence of adherence to all nine ANA Code of Ethics. Emergency Department Position Specifics Maintain ACLS, PALS / ENPC / MICN certification throughout employment. All full time RNs maintain MICN certification throughout employment. Complete ESI triage course within six months of hire date. Attend CPI training within one year of hire date and maintain as required. Demonstrate reverence for life, respect for inherent dignity and worth of each individual, and maintain patient privacy and confidentiality. Utilize ED RN standardized procedures appropriate to patient complaint/presentation after 90 days of employment and competency completion. Qualifications Experience 1 year of experience as an RN in the ER, preferably in the last two years.
