FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt APPLICATION DEADLINE: Open until filled EFFECTIVE START DATE: 2026-2027 School Year POSITION SUMMARY: The SNSI is responsible for the instruction and operation of the NJROTC unit, including teaching a multi‑subject curriculum, instructing in military drill and extracurriculars, and counseling students about the NJROTC program. The SNSI ensures policies and procedures are met. Under the direction of the school principal, the SNSI, with the NSI, plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students and fosters an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development to ensure student success. Education, Certification and Experience Have Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) certification from the Department of the Navy. Have at least 20 years of active‑duty service in the United States Navy or Coast Guard, as a commissioned officer in grades W2–W6. Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication. Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, and community members. Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable. Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below. Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties Comply with State and Federal regulations and Calvert County Public Schools’ policies and procedures. Develop, select, and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Prepare and implement daily lesson plans incorporating effective instructional strategies aligned to school system priorities. Instruct in military drill. Attend and participate in professional development, department meetings, staff meetings, and other requirements set out in the CCPS teacher contract. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes. Strive to improve instructional competence and teaching abilities. Attend Navy‑sponsored training to keep abreast of current requirements of program management and new developments and organizations within the Navy. Require NJROTC cadets to conduct themselves in a military manner at all times when under naval supervision. Ensure cadets observe the chain‑of‑command. Mentor cadets and assist with higher‑education or employment opportunities and goals. Plan, instruct, and supervise, in conjunction with the NSI, extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit, including color guard ceremonies, drill team and rifle team competitions, field trips, basic leadership training camps, etc. Ensure safety and well‑being of cadets is observed at all times during cadets’ participation in NJROTC activities. Requisition and ensure proper care and inventory control/physical security of all government‑furnished equipment as authorized, such as uniforms, training aides, books, drill rifles, etc. Arrange for cleaning and tailoring of uniforms. Prepare periodic reports on program administration and logistics. Assess unit processes to ensure NJROTC program objectives are met. Establish contact with civic groups to obtain their recognition and support of the NJROTC Program. Establish positive rapport with students, staff, parents, and community members. Make annual presentations about the NJROTC program to students attending feeder schools for the purpose of recruiting new cadets to the program. Maintain financial accounts of program operating budget. Prepare financial vouchers to the Navy for reimbursement of expenditures to the school made in support of the NROTC program. Inform students, parents, and community members of NJROTC activities and achievements through school publications as well as local news media. Serve on routine committees or extracurricular duties normally performed by and rotated equitably among other faculty members. Work collaboratively with the NSI on all facets of unit programming. Ensure non‑discriminatory practices are applied and take immediate corrective action when necessary. Think, concentrate and interact with others. Come to work promptly every day. Work flexible hours as necessary. Work under stress and meet all deadlines. Other Duties Perform related work as required or assigned by the School Principal or designee. Physical and Psychological Conditions/ Demands Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment. Unusual Demands May be subject to a flexible work schedule. Terms of Employment Twelve (12) month position with salary determined by the Department of Navy. An additional annual stipend is included for work beyond the normal school day. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit. Evaluation Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools. Application Procedure Position open until filled. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
