Part-Time Recreation Program Assistant
Job Description
The schedule for this position will be Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., along with two evening shifts per week from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on either Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday, not to exceed 29 hours per week. This position is open until filled. Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis, with the first review on Thursday, September 17, 2026. Under general direction, assists in overseeing and coordinating assigned recreation activities and operations within assigned Recreation Division; assists in planning and organizing special events associated with specific recreation programs; assists in supervising, assigning, reviewing, and participating in the work of part-time staff, part-time temporary seasonal employees, and volunteers responsible for providing assigned recreation program services and activities; and ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures.
Examples Of Duties
- Assists in coordinating and overseeing operational activities for assigned recreation programs, services and activities for various ages including youth sports, fee and charge classes, youth and teen afterschool program, senior programs, specialty classes, camps, excursions, special events, and related recreation activities.
- Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for providing recreation services.
- Assists in recruiting, selecting, training, motivating, and evaluating part-time staff, part-time temporary staff, and volunteers.
- Assists in providing staff training.
- Works with employees to correct deficiencies; participates in the development and administration of assigned program budget(s).
- Participates in planning and organizing special events including ordering supplies and equipment.
- Assists the general public in park facility and picnic shelter bookings.
- Assists in evaluating community needs and interests.
- Assists in recommending new recreation programs to meet community needs.
- Assists in promoting and developing marketing campaigns.
- Assists in the marketing of assigned recreation programs to the community.
- Assists in designing, preparing, and distributing publicity including press releases, brochures, pamphlets, flyers, and printed schedules.
- Assists in providing facility management for assigned centers including ensuring facilities are safe and properly maintained.
- Maintains inventory of recreational equipment and supplies.
- Assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of reports and forms.
- Assists in the operation and maintenance of city vehicles.

- Methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.
- Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Ability to:
- Assist in developing, planning, promoting, and implementing varied recreation programs.
- Assists in preparing publicity concerning new or ongoing recreation offerings.
- Elicit community and organization support for programs.
- Assist in recruiting, selecting, training, and evaluating part-time and seasonal staff.
- Supervise and coordinate the work of lower level staff.
- Assist in analyzing and evaluating community needs.
- Understand community needs in a variety of recreation areas and evaluate activities according to those needs.
- Assist in planning, organizing, and prioritizing tasks.
- Exercise sound independent judgment within departmental guidelines.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws, and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions.
- Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Assists in the preparation and administration of assigned budget.
- Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Prepare clear and concise schedules and reports.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Education equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by one year of experience working in youth and/or community recreation or comparable setting. One year of college course work can be substituted for one year of experience. Other Qualifications: Possession of a valid Class C motor vehicle operator's license from the State of California. Physical Demands: Ability to sit, stand, stoop or bend for up to two hours at a time. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to get from one location to another in the course of doing business. Ability to see and hear.

Part-Time Employee Benefits
The City participates in a federally mandated retirement program whereby part-time employees contribute 7.5% of their salary into a deferred compensation plan (monies paid into this plan will be returned to the employee approximately two to three months following separation at the employees' discretion.) Sick leave will be granted in accordance with California State Law.
