This job interviews, determines donor suitability and collects blood from prospective donors. Performs quality control, operates the computer, and completes other administrative and non-administrative duties per instruction of supervisor. Maintains donor/patient confidentiality. Education Required - High School diploma or equivalent Work Experience Required - None Preferred - 1 year experience in phlebotomy and/or medical assistance procedures Certifications Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association Current Driver's License in the state of practice. Must have an excellent driving record to operate company owned vehicles. Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process. Good analytical and problem solving skills. Communication and customer service skills. Job Duties Perform donor health history confidential interview according to SOP, AABB Standards and FDA Regulations. Perform volunteer, autologous, directed donor and therapeutic phlebotomy collections with the appropriate documentation. Computer entries and/or written documentation are reviewed for accuracy. Perform donor health screening including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and hemoglobin and hematocrit determinations according to SOP, AABB Standards and FDA Regulations. Select and prepare an appropriate venipuncture site according to SOP, AABB Standards and FDA Regulations. Provide the donor with accurate information, provide care for adverse reactions, including placing donor in the Trendelenburg position, continuously assessing vital signs and providing oral fluid replacement. Provide post donation instructions to donor. Maintain a positive customer service environment during interactions with donors, co-workers, corporate chair people, patients and visitors. Willingly accepts and supports management decisions. Adhere to department dress code, attends staff meetings and participates in departmental training programs. Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style. Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue. The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain diseases. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases. Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste.
