Since its founding in 2000, Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre/Notes in Motion has remained committed to its original mission: to create dynamic dance theatre that activates emotional expression in a rich and abstract collage. Through an interplay between athletic and articulate motion, we present theatrical and immediate works that engage audiences from start to finish and beckon a response of thought, feeling, and soul. We have created over 250 productions, nurtured a network of artists, and built a robust dance education program, Notes in Motion, that has served over 218 schools and 451,235 students across NYC. Our commitment to diversity is reflected throughout our organization – from our dancers, teaching artists, and staff to our work on stage, in the classrooms of New York City’s public schools, and in underserved neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs. Our presentations and community engagement programs even the landscape for who has access to quality performing arts experiences.

Role Description

The Board of Directors of Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre/Notes in Motion is enthusiastic and highly involved. Our marriage of Amanda’s choreographic work and arts education attracts Board members of differing backgrounds and interests. Now in our third decade of operations, we are eager to grow and strengthen our role as a community anchor and leader. We are looking for Board members who personally believe in our mission and are driven to promote equity, access, and opportunity for all through dance-making and education. In this time of new challenges for the arts and culture sector, your participation on our esteemed Board of Directors could have a lasting impact

Qualifications

Board Meetings

The Board of Directors meets quarterly including during a Board Retreat in September. Board Members have one-on-two meetings over the summer with the Board Chair and Artistic/Executive Director to evaluate their participation, discuss potential roles as officers, Committee participation, and to set goals for the year ahead.

Board members are required to:

• Serve on at least one Board Committee (Engagement, Governance/Finance, Board Development).
• Serve on any event/gala committees and actively recruit additional volunteers to join our committees.
• Attend our Gala and our Performance Seasons — as well as to invite guests, and periodically visit Education programs. In addition, Board members are strongly encouraged to attend festival ASDT engagements and Open Rehearsals.

Responsibilities of Governance:

• Approve mission, vision, values, strategic plan
• Ensure legal and ethical integrity
• Maintain accountability, including complying with reporting and accounting requirements
• Manage risks and mitigation strategies

Budget and Funding

• Approve annual budget
• Approve internal control policies
• Review financial indicators and ensure adjustments are made
• Approve investment policies and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
• Support fundraising activities
• Ensure that targeted (restricted) funding monies are directed appropriately

Programs

• Ensure that programs are achieving objectives

Staff and Human Resources

• Hire and evaluate the executive director, as well as approve their salary levels
• Approve personnel policies
• Approve grievance and whistleblower policies
