High School College And Postsecondary Counselor

The High School College and Postsecondary Counselor provides leadership, guidance, and direct support to students and families as they navigate the transition from high school to postsecondary opportunities, including two- and four-year colleges, technical programs, military pathways, and careers. This role is designed to ensure that every student graduates with a clear, personalized, and attainable postsecondary plan aligned to their strengths, interests, and goals.

This counselor leads a comprehensive, developmental college and career readiness program that begins in ninth grade and intensifies through the junior and senior years. The position works collaboratively with school counselors, teachers, and administrators to ensure that postsecondary planning is integrated into the broader instructional program and school improvement efforts.

Core Responsibilities:

• Provide individualized guidance to students and families on all aspects of the college and postsecondary planning process
• Support students in identifying best-fit postsecondary options aligned to their academic profile, interests, and aspirations
• Guide students through application timelines, requirements, and decision-making processes
• Assist with development of college lists, essays, resumes, and interview preparation
• Provide support with financial aid processes, including FAFSA, scholarships, and affordability planning
• Design and implement a four-year college and career readiness program: 9th10th Grade: Awareness, exploration, and early planning 11th Grade: Focused college planning and counselor assignment 12th Grade: Application, decision-making, and transition support
• Deliver structured lessons, workshops, and small group sessions aligned to each grade level
• Ensure equitable access to postsecondary planning resources and opportunities for all students
• Provide ongoing communication and education for families related to: College selection and admissions processes Financial aid and scholarship opportunities Postsecondary trends and expectations
• Host parent information sessions, workshops, and individualized conferences
• Build and maintain relationships with college admissions representatives, technical schools, and industry partners
• Coordinate and host: College representative visits during the school day Annual college and career fairs Alumni panels and postsecondary exploration events Visit college campuses and participate in professional networks to stay current on admissions trends and opportunities
• Advocate for students by helping them articulate their strengths, experiences, and goals
• Personalize advising through individual meetings, small groups, and targeted supports
• Ensure students are matched with postsecondary pathways where they are most likely to thrive academically and personally
• Collaborate with school counselors, teachers, and leadership to align postsecondary planning with academic programming
• Support integration of college and career readiness into the school's instructional and improvement priorities
• Partner with PLCs and leadership teams to ensure students are prepared with the skills necessary for postsecondary success
• Track and analyze data related to: College applications, acceptances, and enrollment FAFSA completion rates Scholarship attainment Postsecondary persistence indicators (when available)
• Use data to improve programming, identify gaps, and ensure equitable outcomes
