Medication Assistant Summary Work Shift: 12 Hours – Night Shifts (United States of America) Scheduled Weekly Hours: 24 Compensation: Salary Range: $21.00 - $28.00 Union Position: No Responsibilities As a Medication Assistant (MA), you serve as a caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a charge nurse. Provide age-appropriate care supporting the resident’s physical and psychological needs per a care plan. Assist with basic health‑care needs including bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, and recording vital signs. Offer psycho-social support and personal care to assigned residents. Assist with resident repositioning, transfer, and use of transfer techniques and equipment. Perform range-of-movement and passive exercises. Complete tasks related to food preparation and dining, creating a positive dining experience. Assist residents with meals and snacks, providing water and supplements as needed. Administer prescribed medications within delegated scope and state regulations. Document outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary. Communicate changes in condition, medication follow-up, and care concerns to the charge nurse. Collect non-invasive body-fluid specimens and gather vital signs. Provide housekeeping and laundry services to maintain living areas. Assist with wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation. Qualifications Education: High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required. Age: Minimum age of 18 preferred. Experience: Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience preferred. Complete yearly department-specific competency testing and maintain continuing education credits. A minimum of 12 hours of continuing education required annually based on state requirements. Maintain all department-specific required certifications. When applicable, hold a valid driver's license and auto insurance. State-specific certifications: Iowa – Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with the State Board of Nursing; achieve and maintain Certified Medication Aide/Assistant certification after CNA. Minnesota – Nursing assistant certification, completed 75-hour course, registered with Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry; complete Trained Medication Assistant course. North Dakota – Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with the State Board of Nursing; complete Certified Medication Aide/Assistant certification after CNA; Medication Assistant I or II certification required for different facility types. South Dakota – Successful completion of state-approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course; maintain certification with State Board of Nursing. Good Samaritan Society Locations – State required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA). Note: must first have CNA certification before attaining TMA/CMA.
