Additionally, St. John's is proud to be redesignated as a Baby-Friendly® Hospital by Baby-Friendly USA – the accrediting body and national authority for the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in the United States.Come Grow With Us!Type: Full-Time 75 Hours Bi-WeeklyShift: DaysHours: 7:00AM - 3:30PMPay: $32.41 - $35.47 per hourResponsibilitiesMaintain specimen and patient identification throughout the histology workflow.Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Anatomic Pathology computer system to accession specimens, order blocks, stains and recuts, generate daily case logs and work lists, and produce labels.Operate the tissue processor, including daily loading and unloading of cassettes, daily purging, program selection, and monitoring of processing end times.Perform routine tissue processor maintenance and quality control activities and maintain the required documentation.Prepare tissue specimens for embedding by selecting the appropriate mold size and correctly orienting tissue specimens.Perform clean embedding techniques to prevent cross-contamination and tissue floaters.Perform microtomy using proper sectioning techniques, producing sections of appropriate thickness and quality for diagnostic evaluation.Maintain a clean water bath and use appropriate techniques to prevent tissue floaters.Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains in accordance with established laboratory procedures.Filter, change, and rotate stains and solutions at appropriate intervals.Evaluate stain quality daily, document quality control activities, troubleshoot staining issues, and implement appropriate corrective actions.Follow established equipment maintenance schedules and maintain equipment quality control and maintenance logs.Demonstrate knowledge of instrument operating manuals, emergency service contacts, and the location and proper use of laboratory equipment.Follow chemical hygiene and safety procedures for handling xylene, formalin, alcohols, autostainer waste, stains, and paraffin.Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and demonstrate knowledge of the location and use of safety equipment, including eyewash stations, safety showers, and fire extinguishers.Perform frozen section procedures, including embedding tissue in molds, sectioning tissue using a cryostat, mounting sections on slides, and staining slides for immediate evaluation by the pathologist.Dispose of laboratory waste and sharps promptly and in accordance with established safety procedures.Assist the manager with laboratory-related problems and work collaboratively with other team members.Assist with the orientation of new employees and medical students.Demonstrate professional conduct and follow established laboratory policies and procedures.RequirementsAssociate DegreeNew York State license as a Histo-technician or Histo-technologist, as applicable to the position.Previous histology laboratory experience preferred.Equal Opportunity Employer This employer is required to notify all applicants of their rights pursuant to federal employment laws.
