Summary: The School Adjustment Counselor investigates learning and teaching processes and develops psychological principles and techniques to address educational problems, fostering intellectual, social, and emotional development. Analyzes students’ characteristics and adjustment needs and recommends educational programs to promote optimal adjustment. Responsibilities Acts as a liaison between the family and the school. Delivers counseling activities and programs to support the school community. Provides strategies for academic and personal/social success; identifies and assists students experiencing academic and personal/social difficulties, individually or in small groups. Facilitates small groups and provides individual counseling for students with specific needs. Conducts structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions to meet short-term needs of individuals and groups. Delivers prevention, intervention, and crisis management services for students. Consults and collaborates with teachers, staff, and parents/guardians to understand and meet students’ developmental needs. Participates in consultations with administrators, teachers, parents, and others to enhance their work with students. Provides parent education programs. Recommends corrective and supportive procedures to teachers and parents. Assists families in addressing school-related problems and issues. Assists in locating emergency services for students and families in psychological crisis. Refs students with critical needs to appropriate community resources, consulting with parents/guardians. Co‑coordinates with in‑district professionals and community resources. Collaborates with other professionals to enhance student education. Uses program evaluation tools, analyzes data, and modifies program components to improve student success. Might provide short-term, diagnostically oriented interventions with students and/or families. Performs any other duties assigned by the Director of Student Services or the Building Principal. Qualifications Master’s Degree in social work or a related field. Massachusetts certification as a Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional periodicals, journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to use reasoning to evaluate information and recommend appropriate courses of action. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in education. Ability to use professional literature and evidence‑based research for practice decisions. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to present information and respond to questions from staff, parents, and the general public. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with district administrators, principals, staff, and community members. Capacity to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Understanding of confidentiality requirements regarding student records. Willingness to plan, coordinate, conduct, and participate in professional and staff development. Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite. Successful completion of a Criminal Records Check (CRI) and fingerprints. Preferred Qualifications Experience working as a School Adjustment Counselor in an educational setting. Experience delivering services under the MA Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs (ASCA model). Bi‑lingual. Physical Working Conditions Employees must move around the school building, stand, sit, kneel, crouch, or crawl as necessary, reach, and lift at least 15 to 20 lbs. The work environment may involve moderate noise levels and require frequent use of computers and office equipment. Terms of Employment 10 months, 183 work days. 3 personal days, 13 sick days, prorated by date of hire. Benefits are eligible on the start date; enrollment days are calculated from that date. Salary: $55,911 to $111,490 per year. Remuneration paid over 26 paychecks, including a lump sum in June for summer pay. Evaluation Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the HEA/HSC Collective Bargaining Agreement and DESE regulations (603CMR35.00).
