POSITION OVERVIEW Applications will be accepted from: ALL PERSONS INTERESTED Division/Section: AOM Electrical Workdays & Hours: Varied (Shift work, including rotation, weekends, and holidays) subject to change PURPOSE OF DIVISION The purpose of Houston Airport System (HAS) Maintenance, General Maintenance Services Business Unit is to effectively deliver self‑performed maintenance services at each of the three HAS airports. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The purpose of the Electrician is to troubleshoot, maintain, manage, and upgrade existing electromechanical systems to ensure an economical and safe distribution of electricity. This position performs journeyman‑level electrical work by maintaining the terminal and various support buildings’ electrical distribution equipment, lighting systems, and various electrical devices on a daily basis in accordance with NEC, NFPA, and FAA Advisory Circulars. This role acts as a first responder to emergency calls for various types of electrical failures and shutdowns, and manages airside and landside lighting for terminals, surrounding buildings, street pole lights, and airfield lighting systems. This position may be assigned duties at all Houston Airport System facilities including IAH, HOU, and EFD. Candidates must be able to obtain all security‑required badge access, including CBP access, within six months from the hire date. RESPONSIBILITIES Troubleshoots, maintains, manages and upgrades existing electromechanical and electronic installations and systems. Researches and analyzes causes of failures and repairs, replaces, or installs new equipment/components and related hardware to maximize function ability. Provides preventive maintenance ensuring safe and clean operating conditions. Prepares and updates various records, logs and reports related to the work being performed. Responds to emergency calls for electrical failures and shutdowns. Organizes, schedules and monitors work assignments. Researches technical product specifications. Compares and evaluates product prices from vendors to determine the most competitive bid. Assists in inventory control management of electrical parts and components to provide appropriate supply levels. Inspects field locations to determine appropriate types and placement of electrical components for installation. WORK ENVIRONMENT The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) frequently, and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are occasional exposures to extreme temperatures, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases, substances, and/or contagious diseases or physical trauma conditions of short‑term disabling nature (e.g., broken bones or temporary loss of sight or hearing). The position requires the ability to make closely coordinated eye‑hand movements within fine tolerance and/or rapid movements in response to patterned stimuli. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION Requires a high‑school degree or a GED certificate and successful completion of an apprentice electrician program approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training or the equivalent recognized by the Electrical Safety and Licensing Advisory Board. EXPERIENCE No journeyman‑level experience is required. CERTIFICATION / LICENSE A valid Texas Journeyman Electrician License is required. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and comply with the City of Houston’s driving policy. May require a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). PREFERENCES Journeyman Electrician License for 5 years. Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics, and design specifications. Knowledge of National Electrical Codes and experience with electrical tools, meters, and materials in a commercial setting. Experience in high‑voltage (15 KV), primary distribution, emergency generators, and commercial/industrial control systems, preventative maintenance programs, UPS, and PLC. Knowledge of airfield lighting materials and applications is a plus. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors are in accordance with Executive Order 1‑6.
