About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse - Pediatric Psych Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Psychiatric Unit - Pediatric Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing required; Pediatric Behavioral Health experience preferred License: Valid state license required Certifications: BLS; MOAB obtained on-site Must-Have: De-escalation experience Experience with physical restraints Comfortable running groups Documentation skills Description: Immediate start needed. Interviews will be conducted and then manager approval will follow. Candidates must be willing to float between adult and pediatric units as needed. This is a free-standing acute inpatient facility with an emergency department nearby. All patients come from an emergency department and are medically cleared. It is not typical to encounter lines, drains, tubes, etc. Involuntary and voluntary admissions are accepted. Patient age ranges from 5 to 18 years for pediatrics and 18 and older for adults, including geriatric patients. Common pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria. Adult patients commonly present with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and sometimes eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and anxiety. There are no forensic patients or inmates, and the facility is secured but not to the extent of holding patients under arrest. Seclusion rooms are available for use when necessary. Occasionally, substance use disorder or detoxing patients may be seen; however, they must be medically cleared. The unit provides traditional medical and psychiatric care along with specialized therapies, such as pet therapy and group sessions. Patient ratios: Day shift: 1 nurse to 5-6 patients. Night shift: 1 nurse to 13 patients with resource support. Psych techs available on both shifts for pediatric and adult patients. Required support on the unit includes a nurse supervisor available during evenings and weekends and a nurse manager available during the day. There is a house administrator available overnight and on weekends. The nursing charge may have a patient assignment but is present for support. Charting systems and equipment include an electronic medical record system. Travelers may float between all units, adult and pediatric, as necessary. If floating to pediatrics, manager approval may be required. The first week will consist of working days for orientation, followed by scheduled shifts. Weekend rotations are required every other weekend, Saturday and Sunday. Holiday work is expected in rotation. Approval for time off can be requested. The schedule is modified self-scheduling, where travelers sign up for preferred shifts. All shifts need to be covered accordingly, and if not signed up, automatic assignment to vacant shifts will occur. There is an opportunity for scenario-based training and practice if needed.
