The ideal candidate is a practical, field-informed safety professional who can balance regulatory compliance, client expectations, and operational realities. This person must be comfortable engaging with employees at all levels, conducting field visits, coaching teams, supporting incident response, reviewing project safety documents, and helping drive a proactive safety culture across a distributed workforce.
This role requires strong communication, sound judgment, practical problem-solving, and the ability to influence without overcomplicating processes.
Key Responsibilities

- Support consistent implementation of Apex Health & Safety programs, policies, procedures, and expectations across the region
- Partner with Regional, Division, Branch, Program, Project, and Field leadership to promote safe work planning and execution
- Conduct field visits, site safety observations, office inspections, and project safety reviews
- Coach, mentor, and support employees, supervisors, and managers on safe work practices, hazard identification, and risk control
- Review Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Health and Safety Plans (HASPs), Ground Disturbance Plans, variance requests, and other project safety planning documents
- Support incident reporting, response, investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action tracking for injuries, illnesses, motor vehicle accidents, utility strikes, property damage, near misses, Good Catches, DOT events, and other reportable events
- Monitor completion and effectiveness of corrective actions within the region
- Assist with WorkCare case follow-up, return-to-work coordination, restricted duty planning, and workers' compensation case support as needed
- Support fleet safety and driver compliance expectations, including safe driving policy implementation, GPS/telematics follow-up, driver coaching, and coordination with fleet/DOT compliance resources
- Support FMCSA/DOT compliance activities for regional employees, vehicles, trailers, and project work where applicable
- Assist in identifying regional safety trends, recurring exposures, operational gaps, and continuous improvement opportunities
- Support development and delivery of practical safety communications, toolbox talks, safety alerts, newsletters, and engagement content
- Facilitate or support regional safety meetings, Apex Safety Committee participation, and regional safety roundtables
- Assist with onboarding safety support, field readiness, PPE needs, medical surveillance coordination, and training follow-up
- Support Cornerstone training assignments, troubleshooting, and tracking for regional safety training needs
- Provide safety support for subcontractor safety reviews, client safety requirements, and project-specific safety compliance requests
- Participate in Health & Safety program development, Management of Change reviews, and cross-functional initiatives as needed
- Help identify practical ways to simplify safety requirements, reduce confusion, and improve field usability
- Promote a proactive safety culture through visible leadership, constructive coaching, timely follow-up, and consistent communication
Qualifications
- 7+ years of relevant health and safety experience supporting field operations in environmental, construction, industrial, utility, remediation, consulting, or similar work environments
- Demonstrated ability to implement safety programs in practical, field-based settings
- Experience conducting field safety inspections, observations, audits, or project reviews
- Experience supporting incident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and follow-up
- Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and practical application of safe work practices in field environments
- Familiarity with JSAs, HASPs, hazard assessments, PPE selection, and project safety planning
- Ability to communicate effectively with field employees, supervisors, managers, and senior leaders
- Strong coaching and facilitation skills, including the ability to provide constructive feedback professionally
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear, concise, and actionable guidance
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple regional priorities
- Ability to work independently in a remote or distributed environment while staying highly connected with operational teams
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and common safety management systems
- Ability to travel within the Central Region to support field operations, project needs, employee engagement, and incident response
Experience Requirement
Candidates must be able to provide specific examples of field safety leadership, incident response, safety coaching, program implementation, project safety review, or corrective action follow-up that improved safety performance or strengthened operational execution.
Experience limited to academic, compliance-only, or theoretical program development without demonstrated field application will not be sufficient for this role.
Preferred (but not required)
- Experience in environmental consulting, construction oversight, remediation, industrial services, utilities, stormwater, or similar field-based operations
- Professional safety certification such as CHST, ASP, CSP, OHST, or similar credential
- Degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field
- Experience with subcontractor safety management and client prequalification requirements

- Experience supporting medical surveillance, fit-for-duty, WorkCare, or workers' compensation processes
- Familiarity with third-party safety platforms such as ISNetworld, Avetta, or Veriforce
- Experience delivering safety training or facilitating safety meetings for field-based teams
What We're Looking For

- Someone who can build trust with field employees, supervisors, and operational leaders
- A strong communicator who can translate safety requirements into clear, usable guidance
- A visible and engaged safety leader who is comfortable coaching employees in real work settings
- A problem-solver who can balance compliance requirements with operational realities
- Someone who can identify trends, close gaps, and follow through on action items
- A collaborative partner who can work effectively with both Operations and the H&S Program Team
- A self-directed leader who can support a large region without needing daily direction
- Someone with a strong bias toward fit-for-purpose solutions over overly theoretical or overly complicated approaches
