Senior Underwriter

Overview The Senior Large Commercial Renewal Underwriter is responsible for managing and underwriting a complex portfolio of large-premium workers' compensation and multi-line commercial insurance accounts. This role evaluates risk, determines appropriate coverage and pricing, and develops strategic renewal plans to drive portfolio profitability while maintaining strong agency and broker relationships. The ideal candidate will possess deep technical underwriting expertise, strong analytical skills, and the authority to independently manage and negotiate complex multi-state risks. Responsibilities Portfolio Management & Strategic Renewals Manage a complex, multi-million-dollar renewal portfolio focused on large commercial accounts. Develop and implement strategic pricing and underwriting decisions to maximize retention and profitability. Identify opportunities to improve the performance of underperforming accounts while retaining desirable business. Utilize underwriting authority to independently negotiate and finalize complex multi-line renewals. Risk Assessment & Underwriting Analyze and evaluate risks to ensure coverage, pricing, and underwriting decisions align with company guidelines and industry standards. Review underwriting submissions and relevant risk information to determine appropriate coverage terms and premium levels. Underwrite complex, multi-state workers' compensation accounts and related casualty lines. Assess account profitability and exposure across Workers' Compensation, General Liability, Commercial Auto, and Umbrella/Excess lines. Technical Workers' Compensation Analysis Evaluate NCCI and state-specific Experience Modification factors and annual premium audits. Analyze payroll data and employee classifications to identify operational or exposure changes. Review historical loss runs, claim frequency and severity trends, and loss development patterns. Partner with claims professionals to evaluate open indemnity reserves and future claim projections. Collaborate with loss control and safety engineering teams to assess workplace safety programs, industrial hygiene efforts, and return-to-work initiatives. Relationship Management Build and maintain strong relationships with regional and national brokers, agents, and internal business partners. Collaborate closely with underwriting leadership, claims, risk control, and sales teams to support account retention and growth strategies. Serve as a trusted underwriting resource for complex account negotiations and customer service initiatives. Qualifications Required Experience 8-10 years of commercial insurance underwriting experience. Extensive experience underwriting large-premium Workers' Compensation accounts. Multi-line underwriting experience, including Workers' Compensation, General Liability, Commercial Auto, and Umbrella/Excess. Proven experience managing complex, high-value commercial insurance portfolios. Experience working with large, multi-state accounts and exposures. Knowledge & Skills Strong understanding of risk evaluation, loss analysis, pricing methodologies, and portfolio management. Expertise in NCCI experience modification factors, payroll analysis, premium audits, and claims trend evaluation. Strong analytical, decision-making, and negotiation skills. Ability to exercise significant underwriting authority and sound judgment on complex risks. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with brokers, agents, and internal stakeholders. Proficiency in underwriting systems and insurance industry tools. Education Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Finance, Insurance, or a related field preferred. CPCU, CIC, ARM, or other industry designations are a plus. The expected salary range for this role is $87,600-$130,000/year.
