Substitute Cafeteria Worker

The position is responsible for preparing and serving food, cleaning kitchen equipment and facilities, and performing other duties designated by the manager.

  1. Follows procedures in food preparation, equipment use and care, and personal hygiene to ensure that sanitation standards are met as required by the Child Nutrition Services Office and the Virginia Department of Health.
  2. Follows standards of safety in preparing, storing, and serving food as required by the Child Nutrition Services Office and the Virginia Department of Health.
  3. Serves customers promptly and courteously, using correct portion sizes.
  4. Serves food that is attractive and appealing.
  5. Maintains the temperature of food on the serving line and keeps the line clean at all times.
  6. Processes customer transactions promptly and accurately, paying close attention to ensure that students' lunch statuses are not divulged.
  7. Accurately counts money, makes change, and counts the drawer out at the end of the day.
  8. Operates the dish room by rinsing trays and utensils and washing them using the dish machine. Checks all trays and utensils for cleanliness before returning them to the service lines. Cleans the entire area, including the inside of the dish machine, and may be assigned to dispose of trash.
  9. Cleans assigned work areas, including walls, ovens, mixers, tables, steamers, kettles, dish machines, warmers, and utensils; sweeps and mops floors.
  10. Maintains required forms and records as assigned by the manager.
  11. Attends job-related training classes and workshops.
  12. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to accurately count money, make change, and count the drawer out at the end of the day.
  • Ability to read and write in English and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to put forth the best effort in all assigned tasks.
  • Ability to follow safety precautions to avoid injuries, such as minor cuts, falls, bruises, and scalds.
  • Ability to complete written forms and records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

The individual must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use equipment; see and read printed material with or without vision aids; speak clearly in audible tones so that others may understand; lift and carry up to 30 pounds; and bend, stoop, walk, and reach overhead. The individual must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students.

Work Environment:

Duties are usually performed in a cafeteria environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
