Principal Software Development Engineer

Salary: $190,100 - 316,800 per year Requirements:

• We need a solid understanding of relational and non-relational databases, caching, messaging, streaming, data consistency, and data lifecycle management.
• We prefer hands-on experience with public cloud services, containerized workloads, infrastructure as code, continuous delivery, and modern platform engineering practices.
• We seek proven ability to build highly available, fault-tolerant, observable, secure, and cost-efficient production systems.
• We value experience with authentication, authorization, data protection, privacy, threat modeling, and secure software development.
• We look for strong systems thinking and the ability to balance dependencies and tradeoffs across multiple teams.
• We require excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders without direct authority.
• Experience in a regulated industry, especially medical devices, healthcare, or digital health, is strongly preferred.

• We architect systems for scalability, availability, resilience, performance, security, privacy, observability, maintainability, and cost efficiency.
• We establish service boundaries, domain models, API contracts, integration approaches, data ownership, and platform interfaces.
• We assess architectural tradeoffs involving consistency, availability, latency, throughput, complexity, delivery speed, operational risk, and cost.
• We set standards and guidance for service development, API design, cloud infrastructure, data management, deployment, configuration, and system integration.
• We partner with cybersecurity and privacy teams to embed identity and access management, encryption, secrets management, auditability, threat modeling, and secure-by-design principles.
• We develop strategies to meet medical-device, privacy, security, and software lifecycle requirements throughout development and commercialization.
• We identify, document, monitor, and reduce technical, operational, security, project, and business risks.
• We lead architecture reviews and provide practical, actionable direction to engineering teams.
• We evaluate emerging platform technologies and determine when adoption can accelerate delivery, improve reliability, or create competitive advantage.
• We lead proofs of concept and technical assessments using modeling, prototyping, experimentation, and measurable acceptance criteria.
• We guide capacity planning, performance engineering, reliability testing, disaster recovery, business continuity, and integration testing.
• We define and promote observability practices, including logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, service-level objectives, and production health monitoring.
• We collaborate with DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, and infrastructure teams to improve deployment automation, environment consistency, operational readiness, and incident response.
• We communicate complex architectural decisions, alternatives, risks, and recommendations clearly to engineering teams, product stakeholders, and senior leadership.
• We maintain architecture documentation, decision records, interface specifications, system diagrams, and technical roadmaps.
• We independently plan, prioritize, and manage architecture initiatives while providing regular updates on progress, risks, and decisions.
• We take a hands-on technical leadership role in high-priority or complex platform initiatives when needed.
• We mentor engineers and architects, offering technical guidance and helping teams apply architectural direction effectively.
• We advance our software engineering practice by identifying and implementing best-in-class architecture methods, tools, standards, and development practices.
