Lead Electrical Design Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking a Lead Electrical Design Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This individual will play a key role in the full design cycle of switchgear projects—from concept to manufacturing release—ensuring accuracy, reliability, and compliance with all applicable standards. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in power distribution, protection, and control systems, and serve as a technical leader within our organization. This role does not currently include direct reports; supervisory responsibilities may be added as the team grows.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain single-line, three-line, and control/wiring diagrams for custom switchgear projects.
• Lead the electrical design process from customer specifications through manufacturing release.
• Configure and program protection relays (e.g., SEL, ABB, Siemens, Schneider).
• Perform short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies using industry-standard software (e.g., SKM, ETAP, EasyPower).
• Collaborate with mechanical, production, purchasing, and project management teams to ensure timely and accurate project execution.
• Review and approve all electrical documentation for quality, accuracy, and compliance with UL, ANSI, IEEE, and NEC standards.
• Provide technical support during production, testing, and field startup phases.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and drafters in design practices and standards.
• Maintain current knowledge of applicable codes, technologies, and best practices in power system design.
• Select components and develop accurate bills of materials, balancing performance, cost, and supplier lead time.
• Prepare customer submittal drawings and respond to customer and consulting-engineer review comments.
• Develop and maintain standard designs, templates, and part libraries that can be reused across projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred).
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; candidates without a license must be willing to obtain one within 12 months of hire.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in switchgear, power distribution, or industrial electrical design; 10 or more years preferred.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or similar design software.
• Experience with relay programming, protective coordination, and arc flash analysis tools.
• Strong understanding of UL 891, UL 1558, ANSI C37, IEEE, and NEC standards.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
