This position patrols assigned campus areas; provides support for the efficient operation of the College's security department; and enforces Vance-Granville Community College's policies and procedures, to provide a safe environment for students and employees. This position reports directly to the Campus Police Sergeant.

Location: This position is assigned to the VGCC Main Campus in Henderson, NC; however, some travel to other counties in the college's service area is expected.

Essential Duties

• Performs routine security duties in accordance with established Security Department guidelines.
• Locks and unlocks rooms on campus grounds as directed by security guidelines.
• Regularly patrols assigned areas to ensure VGCC students and personnel are in a secure environment.
• Warns violators of rule infractions.
• Complete first aid and CPR training along with operating an AED
• Enforces college student code of conduct and investigates incidents when necessary. Conducts interviews involving incidents that occur on campus and writes incident reports.
• Issues parking citations for violations.
• Opens and closes facilities. Monitors alarm systems and responds when necessary. Monitors and controls access to building and restricted areas
• Maintains high visibility and assists staff, students and visitors on campus with information and/or directions to various buildings or other campus locations.
• Monitors video surveillance systems and Emergency Notification Systems. Monitors and responds to Panic Alert notifications sent through campus IP phones.
• Maintains specialized training and certifications that are required for approved and issued equipment.
• Notifies appropriate personnel of any facility/campus repairs needed or problems identified while on duty (e.g. lights burned out, systems down, plumbing leaks, etc.).
• Makes proper notifications and takes appropriate actions if a safety issue is discovered or reported (e.g. unsafe stairs, falling concrete, broken windows, etc.).
• Checks working order of emergency phones monthly and reports to proper authority any problems.
• Monitors student behavior to ensure a safe learning environment.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or GED.
• Basic Security Officer training or equivalent.
• Valid North Carolina driver's license.
• Must be able to operate a computer and be trained in Microsoft Office Word, Outlook and Excel.
• Must be CPR /AED certified or must be able to attain certification within 6 months of hire date.
• Must have the ability to interact and maintain effective working relations with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and public emergency response agencies.
• Must be available to work nights and weekends on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5 pm or 6 pm to 10 pm and as needed and may work at any of the college's four campus locations.

Preferred

• Associate Degree.
• Experience working in the North Carolina Community College System.
• Three years related experience

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently as needed to move objects.
• Maintain and wear issued uniform and equipment.
• Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects, standing and/or walking for extended periods of times, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, carrying, pushing, pulling, etc.
• Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks.
