The Department of Languages, Cultures and Translation engages in innovative research and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels to develop students' language and communication skills, cultural knowledge, intercultural competency, literacy, and critical thinking in order to prepare its graduates for participation in an increasingly global and multilingual society. Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of their academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Duties include departmental and institutional service, active research, and the development and delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses in both face-to-face and online formats.

Minimum Experience/Education


UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Required qualifications . (1) A Ph.D. in French or a closely related field with a specialization in 20th- and 21st-century French and/or Francophone Studies; (2) native/near native proficiency in French, (3) an active research agenda with peer-reviewed publications related to French and/or Francophone literature/culture/film/theory; (4) potential for external funding; and (5) the ability to teach courses in French at all levels, including undergraduate courses on contemporary France and the Francophone world, as well as upper-level and graduate courses taught within the candidate's areas of specialization. We seek scholars with demonstrated university-level teaching experience and a strong commitment to research excellence. Duties include departmental and institutional service, active research, and the development and delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses in both face-to-face and online formats.

Preferred qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates prepared to teach in a second area outside their primary area of scholarship-such as French for specific purposes, translation, or linguistics. Ideal applicants will present a research agenda that complements existing departmental strengths in literary history and theory, cultural studies, film studies, and translation. Candidates may also be asked to discuss interest in supporting co-curricular French language activities during the interview process.
