Job Description Engineering Technician – Structural (Alteration Installation Team Lead) in Norfolk, VA. Field‑oriented leadership role for ship modernization and sustainment projects. The successful candidate will oversee installation efforts and coordinate all aspects of structural and mechanical work during shipboard alterations and repairs, ensuring safe and compliant execution. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Serve as the structural SME and project lead for hull, mechanical, and structural repair projects, managing day‑to‑day operations onboard ships and in shipyard environments. Lead structural teams in layout, cutting, fitting, installation, and alignment of structural components including bulkheads, deck inserts, framing, and foundations. Interpret NAVSEA drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to plan and execute structural work packages in compliance with 9090‑310 Rev H or latest version. Supervise and mentor shipfitters, mechanics, welders, and helpers to ensure quality craftsmanship and safe work practices. Collaborate with Project Leads, Program Managers, Engineers, QA/QC, and customer representatives to resolve issues and align project goals. Assist in tracking and reporting daily progress, labor hours, and material usage; assist in scheduling and forecasting work. Ensure all structural work adheres to NAVSEA Standard Items, ABS requirements, OSHA regulations, and company policies. Maintain and update all QA documentation (OQE) including weld maps, inspections, and post‑repair testing. Identify and mitigate project risks, support change orders, and contribute to after‑action reporting. Perform duties as Site Foreman as needed for overall task assignment. Submit Daily Status Reports (DSR), develop Condition Found Reports, and update progress using Microsoft Project in POA&M format. Experience and Skills 10+ years shipfitting or structural ship repair experience with at least 3 years in a supervisory or lead role. Expert in shipboard structural repairs, including insert installation, hull cuts, and steel fabrication. Strong understanding of QAWBs, OQE documentation, and structural inspection processes. Proven leadership skills in a shipboard or industrial repair environment. Eligible to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance. Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and aboard vessels. Proficient in reading and interpreting NAVSEA drawings, welding symbols, and installation specifications. U.S. citizenship required due to export control regulations. Preferred Requirements Experience maintaining budgets and material. Former U.S. Navy Hull Technician or shipyard trade certification in structural fabrication or welding. Welding certifications (FCAW, SMAW, GMAW). Experience with HPUs, valves, pumps/motors, hydraulic systems. Experience supporting NAVSEA modernization programs. Experience communicating project cost, staffing, and scheduling to management, subcontractors, and customers. Background in preparing status reports and ensuring plans adhere to contract specifications. OSHA 10 or 30 Maritime Certification. Physical Requirements Exposure to open‑air environments. Required to visit project sites aboard ships and rigs, both onshore and offshore. Wear PPE including ear plugs, safety glasses, hard hat, steel‑toed boots, gloves. Site visits may involve standing, bending, crouching, and climbing. Exposure to sound levels >100 dB. Requires visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and night vision. May work in confined spaces with limited ventilation. Requires prolonged periods of sedentary work, sitting or standing. May involve operating machinery, power tools, and heavy equipment. Must communicate effectively. Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions. Must lift and carry 30 lbs or more depending on tasks.
