Overview Gemini Transportation Underwriters is a leading provider of excess liability insurance for companies in the transportation industry. We offer coverage for all types of vehicles and provide excess liability and railroad protection for freight and passenger railroads and public transit systems. As part of W. R. Responsibilities Determine whether Gemini has a present or potential defense or indemnity obligation on assigned claims and position claims accordingly. Handle assigned claims for which Gemini has a defense or indemnity obligation, including: Actively monitor and evaluate handling of such claims by insureds within self‑insured retentions or underlying carriers, gathering all necessary information, documentation and advice. Participate in the defense of such claims with insureds or underlying carriers to protect the interests of the insured and Gemini, or assume control of the defense as required by policy language, law or circumstances. Retain, lead and supervise monitoring counsel or defense counsel representing the insured, Gemini or both. Establish expense and loss reserves up to authority limits and recommend higher reserves to Claims Unit Manager, Senior Vice President of Claims and President of Gemini as needed. Review, evaluate and respond to demands for payment of an insured’s limits, time‑limited demands, offers of judgment, deposits for settlement and similar requests in a timely manner. Retain and direct coverage counsel to advise Gemini as needed. Represent Gemini at settlement conferences, mediations and courtroom or trial appearances as required. Ensure claims are handled in a manner that prepares the insured and counsel retained to defend the insured for trial, if a negotiated resolution cannot be achieved. Negotiate the settlement of claims on behalf of Gemini up to authority limits and request higher authority as required. Report regularly to Claims Unit Manager, Senior Vice President of Claims, Vice President of Underwriting and President of Gemini on the status of actively handled claims. Perform additional responsibilities and opportunities assigned based on need, performance and demonstrated development potential. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required. Juris doctor with litigation experience preferred. Minimum of six (6) years experience handling or litigating commercial auto liability claims with an insurance company or law firm required; trucking claim experience preferred. Experience handling claims involving public transit systems (buses, subways, etc.) and railroads preferred. Experience handling claims on behalf of umbrella or excess carriers preferred. Excellent investigative and analytical abilities. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Creativity and problem‑solving abilities essential. Ability to assess priorities and manage deadlines effectively. Knowledge and confidence to lead, instruct, question and challenge counsel retained to represent insureds or Gemini or both. Up to 20% travel. Compensation & Benefits Hourly rate: $50–$70/hr. Temporary role (estimated 3–6 months). Part‑time: 20–25 hours per week.
