Lead Assessment Specialist New Bedford Public Schools – Paul Rodrigues Administration Building, New Bedford, Massachusetts Starting Date: Jul 1, 2026 Job Description The Lead Assessment Specialist will manage, organize, and plan all initial screenings and assessments for new student registrations and any necessary English language assessments of current students. They will coordinate with the Kindergarten Specialist on the planning, scheduling, and implementation of kindergarten screening and registration and rescreening as needed. Responsibilities Schedule and administer necessary assessments and screenings with the Family Registration Center and Early Childhood Office. Work with the Registrar to enroll students into New Bedford Public Schools and make placement decisions for English Learners, Newcomers, and SLIFE. Support the Family Registration Center with new student registrations. Collaborate and coordinate with other schools, agencies, organizations, and programs for enrollment and placement. Schedule teachers and screeners for assessments and screenings. Refer students to the Special Education Office for further evaluation when required. Notify principals and special education facilitators each fall about kindergarten students recommended for further evaluation. Publicize Dual Language Education throughout kindergarten registration. Provide support and information to parents/guardians about assessments and screenings. Enter data accurately into ASPEN and maintain records of all assessments and screenings. Use data for tracking and monitoring, providing reports to NBPS administrators as requested. Demonstrate knowledge of current assessments and screenings, attend workshops and professional development to stay current. Attend all meetings as required by DESE and/or NBPS. Qualifications and Experience Minimum three years experience in a school or registration setting. Trained and competent in all WIDA Initial English Language Proficiency Assessments. Trained and competent in all utilized preschool English Language Proficiency Assessments (pre‑IPT and preLAS). Trained and competent in all utilized Early Childhood initial screenings (ESI‑K and Battelle). Minimum Bachelor’s Degree. Licensed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (preferred). SEI Endorsement or licensed as an ESL Educator by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (preferred). Demonstrated belief that every student can achieve at high levels. Demonstrated dedication to lifelong learning, reflection, and continued personal and professional growth. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Outstanding interpersonal and collaborative teamwork skills. Bilingual in Spanish or multilingual and bicultural strongly recommended. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Lived experience to inform engagement with families from diverse cultures and inform registration and enrollment procedures in the Family Registration Center. Experience and proficiency in facilitating trainings on initial English language proficiency assessments, screenings, and the Home Language Survey. Proficiency in administering Literacy and Numeracy assessments and student and family interviews for SLIFE. Attention to detail and ability to evaluate and refine processes and procedures to streamline registration and initial assessments. Special Requirements Flexible hours including some evening and weekend work.
