Substitute School Bus Driver

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes as needed. Operate a school bus that transports students and authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.

Qualifications:

• Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B) with appropriate endorsements
• Ability to pass annual Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Ability to pass random alcohol and drug testing
• Ability to complete required bus driver safety training and maintain certification
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Knowledge of student discipline procedures
• Ability to manage student behavior
• Ability to safely operate a school bus

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Vehicle Operation:

1. Follow assigned routes and adhere to established schedules.
2. Drive bus for extracurricular activities as assigned.
3. Inspect bus before and after operation and report needed repairs.
4. Report accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures; complete required reports.
5. Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel usage, and passenger counts.
6. Keep assigned bus clean and properly fueled.
7. Notify appropriate personnel of route condition changes or hazards.

Student Management:

1. Supervise students while boarding, exiting, and crossing streets.
2. Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
3. Maintain discipline and report behavior concerns according to district procedures.
4. Maintain accurate student rosters.
5. Assist students with disabilities as required, including securing wheelchairs and operating adaptive equipment.

Safety:

1. Observe all traffic laws and school bus safety regulations.
2. Maintain an acceptable driving record.
3. Inspect emergency equipment to ensure proper condition.
4. Correct unsafe conditions and notify supervisor of issues that cannot be immediately resolved.
5. Report hazardous route conditions.

Other:

1. Operate two-way radio to communicate with the transportation office.
2. Work irregular hours as required.
3. Complete required training to maintain certification.
4. Comply with state laws, district policies, and regulations.
5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: School bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher; wheelchair lift/ramps; adaptive equipment. Posture: Prolonged sitting and driving; frequent reaching and repetitive hand and arm motions; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling. Motion: Frequent walking and assisting students on and off the bus. Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying; may assist students or equipment. Environment: Work inside and outside; exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles and machinery; irregular hours as needed. Mental Demands: Maintain mental alertness and emotional control in emergencies and when supervising students.
