In this role, you'll set up and operate CNC equipment to machine precision components from specialized materials. You'll work from blueprints and technical specifications, prepare tooling, set up fixtures and workpieces, machine first articles, make offsets and adjustments, and inspect your work to make sure every part meets requirements.The underlying role requires hands-on CNC setup and operation across machining functions including turning, cutting, drilling, reaming, and boring. You'll:Read and interpret blueprints, routing sheets, sketches, and technical specificationsDetermine tooling requirements, setup procedures, control settings, and machining sequencesPrepare and preset tools for CNC equipmentSet up CNC lathes for turning and related machining operationsMount, align, and secure fixtures, tooling, attachments, and workpiecesAssemble cutting tools and position tool holders in machine turretsRetrieve and load preprogrammed machining instructionsCalculate and set machine controls and key process variablesVerify setups against required dimensions, depths, angles, tolerances, and specificationsMachine first-article parts for inspection and quality approvalMonitor machine operation throughout the production processPerform tool changes and make offsets and adjustments to maintain specificationsMake minor adjustments to preprogrammed instructions when needed to meet product requirementsPerform manual machine functions when necessaryRecognize programming, tooling, or equipment problems and work with supervisors or programming personnel to resolve themInspect finished work using precision measuring and inspection equipmentMaintain machines, tooling, and work areas according to established safety and quality standardsThe source role specifically gives the machinist responsibility for tooling and fixture setup, first-article machining, tool changes, offsets, minor program adjustments, and responding to machine or programming problems.RequirementsThis isn't an entry-level machine operator role. You'll work with complex prints, defined tolerances, precision measuring equipment, tooling, fixtures, and machine controls to make sure each part meets its requirements.The role requires proficiency with equipment including micrometers, dial calipers, dial indicators, and optical comparators. That means knowing more than how to operate a machine.
