A day in this role

Picture your morning starting on the plant floor, checking high‑performance HMI dashboards and historian trends to understand how lines ran overnight. A deviation on an Ethernet/IP‑connected machine catches your eye—you dive into the PLC logic (Allen‑Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix in Studio 5000), validate UDTs and AOIs, and implement a modular code fix. By mid‑morning, you’re refining a new HMI screen aligned to ISA‑101 principles so operators see exactly what matters. After lunch, you’re reviewing vendor controls designs for a new line, confirming they match plant standards and writing the specifications that will guide commissioning. Later, you fine‑tune a VFD, back up the latest code, update network drawings, and log changes. You wrap up by coaching technicians through a structured troubleshooting guide and documenting a small arc‑flash labeling update tied to a recent panel change.

What you'll own
  • Reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of plant automation, control systems, and SCADA infrastructure.
  • Expert support for PLCs, HMIs, industrial networks, data systems, and machine troubleshooting—plus integration of new equipment.
Automation and controls engineering
  • Develop, modify, troubleshoot, and maintain PLC programs in Studio 5000 for Allen‑Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix.
  • Create high‑performance HMI applications (ISA‑101 preferred) that are clear, consistent, and fast to interpret.
  • Set up, tune, integrate, and diagnose VFDs.
  • Ensure robust, standards‑based logic using UDTs, AOIs, and modular architecture.
  • Keep documentation current: PLC backups, wiring schematics for production lines, industrial network drawings, and detailed change logs.
  • Drive root‑cause investigations; install durable corrective actions via controls improvements.
SCADA, data, and networking
  • Lead plant‑wide SCADA development and deployment: architecture design, dashboards, historian integration, and dependable data acquisition.
  • Define and maintain data models, tag naming conventions, and controls standards across machines, departments, and systems.
  • Turn machine behavior into actionable insights via dashboards, trends, reports, and visual tools that clarify performance and variation.
  • Configure communications: PLC‑to‑SCADA links, OPC UA, networked devices, and historian structures.
  • Shape and maintain the industrial network (Ethernet/IP), including managed switches and smart segmentation aligned to plant needs.
  • Continuously seek better reliability, data clarity, and rapid information flow to operators, supervisors, and engineers.
  • Be the primary technical authority for SCADA/data decisions; document and implement changes in a controlled, maintainable way.
Projects and integration
  • Lead automation upgrades, controls retrofits, and new equipment installs from concept through commissioning.
  • Author engineering specifications for controls requirements on new assets.
  • Review vendor designs for conformance with plant standards.
  • Own timelines, budgets, and integration plans; support capital justifications and cost‑benefit analyses.
Operations partnership
  • Serve as the escalation point for controls‑related downtime and operational issues.
  • Grow Maintenance troubleshooting capability and improve equipment reliability through coaching and collaboration.
  • Create standard work, troubleshooting guides, and training materials for operators and technicians.
  • Advance continuous improvement in safety, quality, uptime, throughput, and scrap reduction.
Safety and standards
  • Ensure control systems comply with electrical safety practices and applicable standards.
  • Support arc‑flash documentation, safe work policies, and energy isolation procedures.
  • Contribute to plant‑wide controls standards, cybersecurity practices, and change management.
What you bring Required
  • BS in Electrical, Controls, Automation Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 3+ years of hands‑on controls engineering experience in manufacturing.
  • Proficiency with Allen‑Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix, Studio 5000, and Ethernet/IP.
  • HMI experience (FactoryTalk View, InTouch, Red Lion, Ignition, or similar) for development and troubleshooting.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial networking: IP addressing, managed switches, VLANs, and common protocols.
  • VFD setup, tuning, and integration experience.
  • Ability to read, create, and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and machine documentation.
  • Exceptional problem solving, analytical skills, and root‑cause methodology.
  • Comfort working directly on the plant floor, closely supporting production.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely with control and power voltages/currents.
Preferred
  • Historian systems: Wonderware, Ignition, OSI PI, or SQL‑based solutions.
  • SQL queries, data structures, and basic automation scripting (e.g., Python, VB).
  • Familiarity with MES, OEE, downtime tracking, or manufacturing data systems.
  • Experience applying ISA‑101 (HMI) and ISA‑18.2 (alarm management).
  • Leadership in automation projects and/or SCADA development in fast‑paced manufacturing.
Work environment
  • Regular time spent on the production floor.
  • Must be able to move safely around manufacturing equipment.
  • Willingness to work extended hours or respond off‑shift when needed.
Why you’ll thrive here
  • Shape the roadmap for plant‑wide SCADA and controls strategy.
  • High‑impact role influencing uptime, automation capability, and manufacturing performance.
  • Work with a supportive engineering team and leadership focused on modernizing automation and data systems.
  • Join a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
