Cryogenics Fluids Design Engineer

This position supports the design, development, test, and commissioning of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) for Cryogenics Systems and components for the Space Launch System, under the COMET contract at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Key Responsibilities Design systems involved in transferring cryogenics to and from the launch vehicle, including manual and remotely–operated cryogenic valves, solenoid valves, vacuum‑insulated piping, high‑pressure gas systems, and instrumentation. Develop, plan, and implement system design changes and modifications to improve efficiency, safety, and address obsolescence issues. Develop models and drawings, produce component specifications, and support design review presentations. Review systems for compliance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and support manufacturing, logistics, and operations. Conduct system tests, collect and analyze performance data, troubleshoot equipment/system anomalies. Coordinate external organizational support for work involving the Launch Complex 39 cryogenic system. Research and select special tools and instruments for system operations. Support system safety analysis, Pressure Vessel Systems (PVS) certifications, FEMA/CIL reviews, risk review boards, Logistics Support Analysis reviews, Problem Resolution Teams, design reviews, Process Hazard Analysis, Engineering Review Boards, Integrated Operations planning and scheduling meetings. Create and execute component and subsystem design verification/acceptance plans and test methods to validate performance to requirements. Provide troubleshooting support, interpret analysis data, technical drawings, and schematics to resolve anomalies and provide written corrective action. Oversee construction activities to validate compliance with contract documents (if applicable). Implement the Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) process to ensure asset design for maintainability and reliability. Develop and track metrics to monitor system performance, efficiency, safety, reliability, and obsolescence. Provide guidance and mentoring to junior engineers. Perform other duties as assigned. Key Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a technical equivalent from an accredited institution; at least 10 years of experience and/or an advanced degree. Experience with high‑pressure and cryogenic fluid system components (valves, reliefs, checks, filters, pipe and tubing, etc.) is required. Experience in cryogenics and pneumatics systems at the VAB, ML, Pad‑B, HMF, RSPF, and CIF facilities is highly desirable. Knowledge of Pressure Vessel Systems (PVS) design requirements is required. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment. Strong verbal and written communication, presentation, customer interface, organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills. Ability to coordinate work between multiple project disciplines. Self‑motivated, initiative‑driven, able to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to perform root‑cause failure analysis to component level. Experience with Creo modeling and drafting and Windchill is highly desired. Experience in the design and sustaining of nuclear or oil and gas systems desired. Capable of reading, understanding technical manuals, drawings, and schematics. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance, if necessary. Physical Requirements Climb stairs, wear hearing and eye protection, and use personal protective equipment. May involve extended periods of sitting, walking, or standing. Must be able to quickly evacuate buildings in an emergency. Must be able to travel, including airline travel, to support the position and may require travel from customer locations. Work Environment & Attendance Work inside and outside the test complex, walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders and platforms. Occasional overtime and weekend work may be required.
