A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides basic patient care and assists nurses with daily activities to ensure patients are safe, comfortable, and well cared for in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and other healthcare facilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist patients with bathing, grooming, dressing, and personal hygiene.

• Help patients eat, drink, and maintain proper nutrition.

• Assist patients with walking, transferring, repositioning, and other mobility needs.

• Monitor and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure, as assigned.

• Observe patients for changes in physical condition, behavior, or emotional well-being and report concerns to the nurse.

• Measure and record food and fluid intake and output as directed.

• Keep patient rooms clean, organized, and comfortable.

• Change bed linens and assist with maintaining a sanitary environment.

• Provide emotional support and communicate respectfully with patients and their families.

• Follow infection-control procedures and safety guidelines.

• Document patient care accurately and maintain confidentiality.

• Respond promptly to patient calls and assist with other duties as assigned by the supervising nurse.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Current CNA certification or state-approved nursing assistant credentials.

• High school diploma or GED may be required by the employer.

• Basic knowledge of patient care, infection control, and safety procedures.

• Good communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.

• Compassion, patience, dependability, and attention to detail.

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist with patient transfers, with or without reasonable accommodation.

• CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required.

• Successful completion of required background checks and health screenings.

Work Environment

CNAs commonly work in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehabilitation centers, home healthcare agencies, and hospice settings. Work schedules may include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.
