Veterinary Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY

The Veterinary Assistant provides essential support to the Vetco Total Care full‑service hospital, delivering high‑quality medical care to patients while ensuring exceptional customer service for pet owners.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Greet clients and patients, escort them into exam rooms, record weight and vital signs, and document all data accurately in the electronic medical record. Assist doctors and veterinary technicians with routine and emergency appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under directed supervision. Perform patient restraint, collect and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications, and maintain accurate electronic records. Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results to doctors and clients, and update records. Assist in preparing patients for surgical and dental procedures, monitor anesthesia, and support recovery and discharge or transfer procedures. Administer in‑hospital treatments for sick patients, including injectable, oral, and intravenous therapies; keep patients clean, hydrated, and fed when indicated. Assist with training new staff and dissemination of knowledge under the HOM/HLOD direction. Maintain a clean hospital environment through regular cleaning and adherence to scheduled maintenance. Provide additional duties as assigned, including backup phone and front‑desk support as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

At least 1 year of experience in veterinary practice or related animal care, demonstrating proficiency in the described skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Compassionate, professional demeanor in stressful situations. Proficient telephone and computer skills. Team‑player attitude, open to learning new techniques and treatments and willing to embrace change.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Positions are primarily performed in the Veterinary Hospital. Duties may require bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and long periods of standing. Frequent direct contact with clients and their pets is expected.

SALARY

Hourly or salary range: $15.50 – $25.00
