Full Time Admin Main Campus Jacksonville, FL, US 6 days ago Requisition ID: 1288 Job Title: Lab Manager Department: Chemistry & Physics Position Reports to : Department Chair Position Class : Non-Exempt Position Type : Full-Time About the Position The Department of Chemistry & Physics in the Stein College of Arts & Sciences at Jacksonville University is currently accepting applications for a Lab Manager position. Under the direction of the Department Chair, the incumbent must coordinate and manage the day-to-day operation of the department. Supervisory Responsibilities: Coordinates the procurement, servicing, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities with Aramark and external vendors. Promotes compliance with OSHA regulations and University Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) policies by conducting laboratory inspections, monitoring instructional laboratories, overseeing chemical inventory and waste storage, and maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all teaching and research laboratories. Oversees corrective actions identified during annual laboratory safety inspections, working with faculty, staff, and facilities personnel to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and University safety standards. Supervises and trains student laboratory assistants, assigning work, monitoring performance, and ensuring adherence to laboratory safety procedures. Duties/Responsibilities: Coordinate, prepare, and manage all General Chemistry laboratory courses (CHEM 101, CHEM 204, CHEM 205), including solution preparation, laboratory station setup, equipment preparation, and providing support to instructors during laboratory sessions. Prepare reagents, chemicals, and materials for upper-level chemistry laboratories, including Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry laboratories. Provide laboratory and department support to the Physics program as needed. Procure, organize, and maintain inventory of commonly used chemicals, supplies, and laboratory materials while ensuring proper storage and compliance with University, state, and federal regulations. Serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) by implementing and maintaining the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), promoting safe laboratory practices, and participating in Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) meetings and safety initiatives. Manage chemical waste collection, labeling, storage, and disposal from teaching and research laboratories in accordance with applicable regulations and in coordination with the CHO. Submit, track, and follow up on facility work orders for laboratory repairs, maintenance, and building-related needs through Aramark and external service providers. Coordinate the receipt, inspection, and distribution of laboratory shipments, including time- and temperature-sensitive materials, chemical deliveries, and large equipment orders. Assist with troubleshooting, maintenance, and basic operation of laboratory instrumentation used in undergraduate teaching laboratories and research activities. Maintain organized and functional laboratory spaces, ensuring equipment and instruments, chemicals, and supplies are prepared and available to support instructional and research activities. Support departmental activities and service initiatives, including student recruitment events, outreach activities, graduation ceremonies, and other departmental needs as assigned. Required Skills/Abilities: Proficient verbal and written communication skills Time-management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks Proficient in Blackboard, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Quartzy (website) Ability to read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Strong background in chemical instrumentation and calculations Education, Certificates, Licenses, and Experience: B.S. Chemistry is required; M.S. Chemistry is desirable Training in RCRA preferred (refresher courses taken as needed) Physical Requirements: Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach. Must be able to lift/carry equipment up to around 30 lbs. Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines. Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone. Adequate verbal skills to project to a classroom.
