JOB SUMARY To act as patient advocate, providing continuity of caredesigned to meet individual patient needs through collaboration with othermembers of the health care team. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goalsof the organization. The Med Surge Nurse will assess the needs of individualpatients including but not limited to adult, pediatric, adolescent, andgeriatric patients. The LVN for each shift, shall be responsible forproviding staffing the hospital's medical floor, and as such shall be able todemonstrate skills in basic nursing care to meet the procedures anticipated bythe hospital and defined within the scope of services and care for which thehospital is capable of providing. QUALIFICATIONS: Licensure as a LVN in the State of Texas Demonstrates ability to stand and/or walk at five hours perday. Demonstrates ability to lift and/carry over 20 pounds on aregular basis. Demonstrates ability to push/pullover 25 pounds on a regularbasis. Current BLS Certification OCCUPATIONALEXPOSURE Category I exposure to blood borne pathogens, frequentexposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards. RESPONSIBILITIES: Performsassessment/data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing onphysiologic, psychologic and cognitive status. Formulatesa goal directed plan of care, which is prioritized and based on determinednursing diagnosis and patient outcomes. Implementscare in a knowledgeable, skilled, consistent manner in reaching the desiredpatient outcomes through nursing processes. Establishpriorities of patient care based on essential patient needs and availablecenter resources of time, personnel, equipment and supplies. Performsefficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols,remaining calm, informing appropriate persons and documenting events. Demonstratesapplied knowledge base in areas of medical/ surgical patient care, actions ofpharmaceuticals and anesthetic agents, laboratory values, safety and legalissues and all emergency equipment. Practiceseffective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sounddecision making. Completesdocumentation duties in the patient record, which is timely, accurate andconcise. Works aspart of a team in delivering patient care. MaintainsCPR Attendsall mandatory in-services and participates in staff meetings. Remainsflexible, adaptive and able to accept and implement new ideas and approaches. Treatsall patients equally adopting the Facility's Patient Rights policy. Reviewsand carries out physician orders in an appropriate professional manner. Countsnarcotics with another nurse and replenishes supply as necessary. Adheres tothe facility's medication management protocols. Uponpatient admission to the hospital, conducts initial nursing assessment. Isknowledgeable about and responsive to emergency situations, i.e. cardiac arrest, drug reaction, fire, disaster etc. Initiatesbasic life support measures, if required Reports andcompletes appropriate forms for variance incidents related to patients,visitors, and employees. Readies thearea to receive patients. Each shiftwill check defibrillator and crash cart integrity daily.
