Registered Nurse (RN) - Day Shift

Job Summary Job ID: 36494 Agency: Department of Corrections – Correctional Health Location: Pierre, South Dakota Women's Prison Salary: $34.00 to $39.00 per hour (plus $1.50 weekend differential and potential for overtime) Pay Grade: N2 Closing Date: Open Until Filled Shift: Day shift, 6:00 am to 6:30 pm (may require any shift, weekends, and holidays) Responsibilities Document nursing care and maintain accurate inmate medical records. Transcribe reports at change of shifts. Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines. Preserve confidentiality. Provide physical care, administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection‑control measures, provide crisis intervention, interview and triage offenders, and perform patient and staff instruction. Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures. Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies. Occasionally assist in restraining an offender for medical reasons. Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of offenders during triage, sick call and emergency situations. Perform physical and emotional assessments of offenders during triage, sick‑call and emergency situations, employing basic nursing and assessment protocols. Promote safety and security of the clinical environment, including careful handling of contraband and counting necessary items such as syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control. Operate clinical equipment available in the assigned work unit. Notify supervisor of any security or safety violations via report writing. Attend required training programs such as Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course. Qualifications Current, valid Registered Nurse license issued by the South Dakota Board of Nursing or a state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC). Required Competencies Ability to effectively treat patients daily in a variety of settings. Ability to follow patient confidentiality standards. Ability to respond to emergency situations involving offenders and/or medical conditions. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to read and comprehend English. Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing. Excellent discernment and decision‑making skills. Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions. Ability to work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis. Preferred Qualifications Correctional nursing experience. Acute care or long‑term nursing experience. Charge nurse and/or supervisory experience. Conditions of Employment The SD DOC is committed to a drug‑free workplace. Selected individuals must also successfully complete a written and practical self‑defense exam and CPR to AHA guidelines, as well as TB screening. The SD DOC is exempt from the Civil Service Act and eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
