Licensed Practical Nurse

RESIDENCY Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s) for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the application: New York State JOB RESPONSIBILITIES The work involves the routine care of patients in accordance with a detailed and well-defined patient care plan. In a skilled nursing facility, the Licensed Practical Nurse works under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Assignments concerning patient care are specifically provided with limited leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision of subordinates will vary with the type of facility providing the patient/resident services. Does related work as required. Prepares, administers and records medications according to the physician’s order and medication policies of the facility; Carries out uncomplicated therapeutic treatments such as giving enemas, preparing and applying simple dressings and administering certain medications in accordance with established policy; May assist in or actively implement the nursing care plan for patients/residents; May take the temperature, note the rate of pulse and respiration, and observe and record other signs and symptoms as directed; Collects specimens and obtains cultures and assists in carrying out diagnostic procedures under supervision; Assists in the admission and discharge of patients; Assists patients in performing ambulation exercises and maintaining proper joint motion; Cares for equipment used in care of patients as directed; and Performs other related duties as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Working knowledge of nursing techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices; working knowledge of hospital sanitation and hygiene; ability to carry out therapeutic treatments prescribed; ability to understand and carry out exactly detailed oral and written instructions; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to get along well with patients and others; cheerfulness; good moral character; patience; emotional stability; and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Applicants must meet all requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment: Qualification Option #1 Training/Education: N.A. General experience: N.A. Supervisory experience: N.A. License/Certification: Possession of a New York State license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Other requirements: License must be maintained in good standing throughout employment. Qualification Option #2 Training/Education: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department as licensure qualifying no more than 90 days prior to submission of an application for employment. General experience: N.A. Supervisory experience: N.A. License/Certification: Submission to the New York State Department of Education of the Application for Licensure as Licensed Practical Nurse, the Application for Limited Permit, and payment of the required fees. Other requirements: Must obtain licensure from the New York State Department of Education within 90 days of graduation from the nursing education program to be eligible for continuing employment. License must be maintained in good standing throughout employment. Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements. Licensed Practical Nurse - NC in the County Service. Licensed Practical Nurse - C in all other divisions. NOTE: Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position.
