Pre-Licensed Clinical Therapist Trainee

Position Overview Pre‑Licensed Clinical Therapist Trainee (Marriage & Family Therapist, Master of Social Work, and Professional Clinical Counselor) works in community mental health clinics, field, and institutional settings, providing rehabilitative mental health/substance abuse services to children, adolescents, families, and older adults with severe mental or emotional disorders. Trainees may obtain supervised clinical experience. Applicants willing to work in forensics, criminal justice, or after‑hours positions are encouraged, as well as those seeking traditional schedules. About the Department Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) provides mental health and substance use disorder services to county residents experiencing major mental illness or substance abuse issues. Services emphasize children/youth, adults with serious mental illness, and individuals with substance use disorders, along with outreach, prevention, and early intervention. Education Applicants must possess one of the following: Pre‑Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Trainees : Must have received, or be within three months of receiving, a Master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy. Pre‑Licensed Master of Social Work Trainees : Must have received, or be within three months of receiving, a Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited institution. Pre‑Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Trainee : Must have received, or be within three months of receiving, a Master’s degree that is at least 48 semester units in a counseling or psychotherapy field of study. Experience Government or private inpatient, psychiatric hospital, or behavioral health clinics/programs/contract agencies serving persistently mentally ill clients. Child/adolescent and family therapy. Crisis intervention/brief therapy setting with severely mentally ill adults/children. Quality assurance or utilization review activities. Intensive care coordination with physical health care providers for severely persistently mentally ill clients. Case management for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. Coordinating care for individuals with co‑occurring substance disorders. Transitional care coordination between inpatient and outpatient levels for medical complexity or severely persistently mentally ill adults and children. Working with detained youth and incarcerated adults in correctional settings, such as institutions/locked detention facilities or with probationers/offenders recently released from a correctional setting. Languages Applicants fluent in American Sign Language, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, and/or Vietnamese are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional compensation is associated with positions requiring the use of bilingual skills; testing may be required to receive additional compensation. Conditions of Employment Pre‑employment process requires a background investigation, fingerprinting, medical exam, drug and/or TB testing. Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident. Travel within the county may be required. Some programs offer 24‑hour services; assignments may require evenings, weekends, holidays, and on‑call. The county will not consider candidates requiring visa sponsorship. Trainees must become registered with the Board of Behavioral Health within twelve months of employment or may be terminated. Upon registration, promotion to Pre‑Licensed Clinical Therapist may occur.
