The Cambridge Genomic Laboratory (East GLH) is looking to recruit a Clinical Scientist to the Haem-Onc cytogenetics team. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate knowledge and understanding of genomic testing for leukaemia diagnosis. You are required to have several years of hands-on experience analysis of FISH and G-banded Karyotype analysis. SNP array analysis experience would be desirable as well as cytogenetic laboratory techniques and safe sample handling. Service improvement and quality management in a UKAS accredited laboratory is highly desirable. Clinical Scientist roles will include supervision and mentoring of staff and managing resources to deliver a safe and accredited service. The Laboratory is part of the East NHS Genomic Laboratory Hub. This is one of seven Genomic Hubs established to provide the National Genomic Medicine Service for NHS England, led by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and working with Nottingham University Hospital and University Hospital Leicester. Working hours are rostered between 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday, so flexibility is desirable.

Main duties of the job

1. Analysis, interpretation, reporting and authorization of hematology cancer cytogenomic tests

2. Deliver and maintain a high-quality diagnostic service to regional oncology services

3. Provide advice to clinicians and colleagues

4. Manage a small team of scientists by recruiting, training and supporting continual personal development

5. Ensure the continuous improvement and development of laboratory services

6. Ensure the continued ISO:15189 compliance of the laboratory using the quality management system

All roles in the Trust include a mandatory 12-week training period. Therefore, successful candidates are expected to have the Right to Work for a period of at least 6 months from the proposed start date. Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• First degree in an appropriate biological science or equivalent qualification
• Assessed completion of formal training programme in genomics, clinical cytogenetics or cancer genetics (i.e. MSc or similar) OR Experience externally assessed as being equivalent
• Registration as a Healthcare Scientist (Clinical Scientist or Biomedical Scientist) with the Health Care Professions Council

Desirable

• Membership of relevant professional organisation (e.g. ACGS, AHCS, BSGM, IBMS)

Experience

Essential

• Significant work experience in a Clinical Diagnostic Genetics laboratory, working as a Clinical/Biomedical Scientist, undertaking routine and complex genomic tests
• Analysing genomic data and reporting genomics tests
• Acting as a duty scientist or team leader

Knowledge

Essential

• To have a thorough knowledge of human cytogenetics and/or cancer genetics
• Knowledge of the processes involved in examining cancer samples in a clinical cytogenetic laboratory
• To have a good knowledge of analytical methods and processes used for reporting cytogenomic test results

Skills

Essential

• Able to recognise patterns of abnormality and relate them to clinical situations and provide appropriate advice; To have developed ability to deduce probability from a range of opinions
• Good verbal and written communication including the ability to use Microsoft packages
• Able to use and manipulate laboratory computer systems, microscopes and standard software packages for analysis and reporting
