Bus Monitor
Rides buses and helps driver ensure safe and orderly transportation of students.
Minimum Qualifications
Shall be subject to testing for use of alcohol or controlled substance that violate law or federal regulations Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility) Valid Texas driver's license Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee

Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment Ability to work well with children Knowledge of student discipline procedures Ability to manage student behavior

Organization Climate
The bus monitor fosters positive school morale through activities such as the following:
- Assesses and plans improvement of the school, school district, or community environment.
- Reinforces excellence.
- Promotes a positive and caring climate.
- Uses effective communication skills.
- Becomes familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to driver.
Student Management
The bus monitor promotes positive student conduct through activities such as the following:
- Occupies a rear seat of the school bus.
- Observes the posted safety rules (Standing and/or walking in the bus shall not occur unless necessary).
- Helps supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street following established safety procedures.
- Maintains an updated route schedule.
- Assists students on and off the bus according to their individual needs including lifting and carrying students with disabilities.
- Learns and adapts to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
- Manages student behavior and report student discipline problems in a timely manner to appropriate administrator.
Safety
The bus monitor promotes safety through activities such as the following:
- Operates equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Makes sure that seat belts, harnesses, or car seats are used correctly and help students use safety devises when needed.
- Follows emergency procedures including evacuation of students as needed and assist driver to administer first aid, if necessary.
- Follows established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and assisting students.
Professional Growth and Development
The bus monitor participates in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:
- Attends any specified meetings or professional development to improve job performance.
Qualities of Effective Bus Monitors
The bus monitor exhibits qualities such as the following:
- Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
- Complies with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
- Complies with the standards of conduct as set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, or standards.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Attends and completes required training program to maintain safety certification status.
- Participates in district and campus staff development programs that improve job related skills.
- Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- None
Equipment
Wheelchair lift, ramp, lock, specialized and adaptive equipment used by students, Safety equipment, reflective signs, fire extinguisher and two-way radio at bus driver's request and other equipment applicable to the position.
Working Conditions
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
- Frequent standing and sitting: Kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
- Frequent walking and reaching.
- Frequent heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive equipment.
- Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold and inclement weather); exposure to noise and vehicle fumes; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases); work around vehicles and machinery and moving parts; may work irregular or prolonged hours.
- Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
