Veterinarian - Area Chief of Staff

Pay Range (full‑time): $121,865 – $176,027 annually. Variable pay based on production is available in all states except Puerto Rico. The pay range reflects a general hiring range for the area; the specific rate is set based on the candidate’s experience, skill level, abilities, education and may vary by location and schedule. This posting will remain open for a minimum of two weeks or until a sufficient pool of qualified applicants has been received. Area Chief of Staff Summary of Job Purpose and Function The primary purpose of the Area Chief of Staff is to lead, develop and manage associate veterinarians in their hospitals to ensure Banfield can attract, develop, engage and retain doctors that deliver quality care and meet expected hospital performance measures. The position drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) in their assigned hospitals, ensuring every pet receives consistent care aligned with Banfield’s six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client‑centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care. Essential Responsibilities Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits, as required by federal, state, or local law. Manage the controlled substance inventory for relief doctors. Own doctor engagement and retention by assessing risk, ensuring a proactive retention strategy, and creating a culture of community and engagement. Provide effective medical leadership, driving an inclusive and collaborative work environment in partnership with practice managers. Validate the clinical skillset and alignment with quality standards of doctors, veterinary assistants, and veterinary technicians through medical record reviews, quality assignments, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Provide veterinary services; time spent in clinical roles varies by hospital count, direct reports, and hospital performance. The role is 100% hospital‑based and a working manager. Oversee the coaching program for newly hired veterinarians, ensuring an engaging experience and development of clinical, surgical, and dental skills. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition team to recruit veterinary talent and act as a brand ambassador in the local veterinary community. Work with associate doctors to ensure they have the skills to achieve productivity goals through high‑quality medicine and preventive care. Deliver veterinary operations KPIs for assigned hospitals through leadership and partnership with practice managers. Develop a veterinary leadership talent bench and succession plan for assigned hospital pod. Ensure compliance with Banfield’s clinical essentials, government regulations, and veterinary industry standards through veterinary quality assessments, medical record reviews, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Champion a preventive care culture by communicating, demonstrating, and validating behaviors that drive optimum wellness plan growth and retention. Create a “yes” culture by driving access to care and superior client service, managing client complaints related to medical standard of care. Manage medical equipment inventory and new medical equipment requests in partnership with the Director of Veterinary Quality. Deliver the highest level of veterinary care to every pet in a professional and ethical manner, ensuring exceptional client and pet experience. Establish trust with clients through effective preventive care, complete diagnostic workups, thorough treatment plans, and clear home‑care communication. Other job duties as assigned. Project timelines and deadlines may require more than 40 hours per week. Requires strong reasoning, memory, math, language, and communication skills. Ability to follow written, oral, or diagram instructions. Requires ambulatory skills to perform duties in the hospital. May lift and move up to 50 pounds; lift, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as needed. Requires good hand‑eye coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity for keyboard use and equipment operation. Noise level is moderately high. Expose to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch; occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances. Some travel required for hospital assistance, vendor visits, and associate education. Banfield policies do not supersede legal responsibilities and medical judgment; applicable laws and regulations prevail. DEA License Candidate must obtain state‑controlled substance and federal DEA license within 3 months of employment, unless otherwise required by the state of employment. USDA Accredited Must be accredited by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, National Veterinary Accreditation Program within 3 months of employment. Experience, Education and / or Training Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree required. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with all applicable state veterinary boards. Three years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
