Jungle Intern

Job Overview Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is seeking a Jungle Intern to support the Lied Jungle, America’s largest indoor rainforest exhibit. The position is seasonal, offering up to 24 hours per week for 12 weeks during the fall session (September 22nd–December 14th, 2026). Interns will work closely with animal care staff on research projects, animal care, exhibit maintenance, and public education. Schedule & Orientation Interns must be available for the full fall session and attend the first day orientation (9:00AM–4:00PM). Weekly commitments include up to 24 work hours and one afternoon professional development session starting the second week. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and during short shifts is required. Responsibilities Develop and present an internship project aligned with animal care staff research needs. Attend weekly professional development sessions and complete all learning goals on the internship checklist. Participate in mid‑point and final evaluations. Assist with daily—tasks such as cleaning and general maintenance of exhibits and building, animal care, recordkeeping, enrichment, monitoring behavior and health, diet preparation, and feeding. Support building upkeep, cleaning, and maintenance to meet USDA and AZA standards. Complete a life‑history report on an assigned species. Design an enrichment device, addressing construction, safety, and implementation for the assigned species. Observe animal care staff during handling, restraint, and training sessions when applicable. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications At least 18 years old. Excellent time‑management and strong communication skills. Ability to follow detailed instructions, work independently, and cooperate with interns, volunteers, and staff. Demonstrated safety awareness and adherence to wildlife safety protocols, including use of a KN95 mask when within 6feet of primates, otters, pygmy hippos, and bats. Positive, team‑oriented attitude with willingness to contribute to the Zoo’s mission. Education & Experience Interns must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university, with at least one year of relevant coursework in biology, zoology, animal behavior, or a related field. Prior experience with mammals at an AZA institution is preferred but not required. Requirements Pass a pre‑employment background check, drug screening, and a negative TB test. Must be able to comply with the physical demands of the role. Physical Demands The internship requires significant physical exertion, including climbing stairs and ladders, climbing 4‑foot barriers, lifting up to 50pounds, and working in hot, humid conditions. Applicants must be able to meet these demands or may be reassigned to another department. Work Environment Routine exposure to hot and humid conditions. Public Contact Interpreting the public frequently; an expectation of professionalism, excellent customer service, and the possibility of public speaking and educational presentations.
