Plainfield, IL - Equipment Operator - Streets Division

Description The Village of Plainfield is looking for qualified applicants to fill a full-time Equipment Operator position. Under the general supervision of the Crew Leader or Superintendent, this position performs work to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot Public Works equipment and vehicles to maintain various Village systems and infrastructures. Other labor-intensive duties may be assigned. Essential Functions Performs pavement repair, pothole repair, cuts pavement, digs area, shovels, smooths, rolls asphalt. Operates and uses a variety of power-driven and heavy construction tools and equipment. Maintains and repairs streetscape, hardscape, and landscape treatments requiring debris removal, mowing, weed whipping, planting, pruning, seeding, fertilizing, mulching, brick and cement work, irrigation installations and repairs. Performs snow and ice removal from streets and sidewalks. May assist in tree maintenance. Performs set-up, break-down, and clean-up for Village festivals including setting out trash boxes, putting out barricades, putting up banners, and breaking down/cleaning up same at completion of festival. Performs sign installation and repair of street signs and pavement markings and striping. Works as flagger for crew working in traffic. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three years’ experience in a Public Works related environment and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Must possess and maintain a Class “B” CDL Illinois State driver’s license. Class “A” preferred but not required upon hire. Other Skills and Abilities Competence in using radios, tablets and computers. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug test and background check. Other Qualifications Must be able to be on call for emergencies 24 hours a day, including but not limited to snow/ice removal, storm cleanup and after-hours utility excavation. Paid vacation, two personal days, twelve sick, and eleven holidays are also provided annually. The hourly pay range for this position is $32.06-$43.28, depending on qualifications and experiences. Candidates with less qualifications than posted may be considered at our Public Works Laborer level. Which would include anyone without a current CDL. Candidates would need to be able to obtain the license within 90 days of employment. The hourly range for the Public Works Laborer position is $30.16-$40.72.
