General Description:
The Student Accessibility & Academic Success Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that students with disabilities and other support needs receive the appropriate accommodations and resources to succeed academically. This role involves working closely with students, faculty, and staff to develop and implement individualized support plans, facilitate accessibility services, and promote an inclusive learning environment. WWU provides employees and their dependents with an opportunity to enroll in undergraduate, masters or doctoral coursework for credit at the university at a free or reduced cost. Employees interested in undergraduate degrees are eligible upon completion of three months of service. Masters or doctoral (including EDS) level degrees begins upon completion of six months of service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluate documentation and establish services for students, faculty and staff.
- Review and revise policies as necessary to remain compliant with federal and other corresponding regulations.
- Ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and its amendments and other federal laws, such as the Fair Housing Act, when applicable
- Stays abreast of changes in disability laws and best practices in accommodations and required services.
- Maintain confidential records of student services.
- Contract for and coordinate interpreting services for WWU classes and events.
- Coordinate materials that need to be provided in alternative formats.
- Meet with prospective students and their families to discuss possible services.
- Serve as a liaison for students and faculty when an accommodation needs to be negotiated.
- Provide training, guidance and support to faculty and staff working with students with disabilities and collaborate with support services on campus.
- Work with University Information Technologies staff to review and evaluate assistive technology, telecommunication and other adaptive equipment/devices to assist students with disabilities.
- Consult as needed with the University Coordinator of Legal Affairs
- Collaborate with other departments as needed
- Proctor student examinations.
- Offer academic coaching and advising to help students develop effective study strategies, time management skills, and goal-setting techniques.
- Coordinate and conduct workshops on topics such as study skills, test preparation, and self-advocacy.
- Monitor individual student progress and perform proactive outreach to students.
- Monitor and assess student progress, providing additional support as needed to ensure academic success.
- Participate in recommending, developing and monitoring systems to provide and track support services to new and continuing students, including training staff as necessary to utilize monitoring systems, and preparing reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
- Three (3) years of student disability services experience in higher education preferred.
- Active, energetic involvement in small college environment and a commitment to improving the quality of living and learning on a university campus.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, faculty, students and parents.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Desire to work with college students.
- Ability to work without constant supervision (self-motivated).
- Ability to handle more than one task at a time.
Work Schedule:
This is an exempt, 40-hour per week; benefit eligible, 12-month position requiring evening and weekend hours as needed.
