Intercultural Specialist, Rhode Island School of Design Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI Position Details Type: Full‑Time Category: Counseling and Psychological Services; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Services Job Number: R‑01914 Location: 72 Pine Street Job Summary Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks an Intercultural Specialist to serve as a clinical staff member within Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). This role, under the direction of the Director and senior level staff, provides clinical, educational, outreach, and consultation services specifically relevant to the needs of racial and ethnic minority students, in addition to generalist responsibilities. Services include routine psychological intervention, prevention, and post‑vention programs and services to the college community, primarily to students. The Intercultural Specialist is a highly valued member of the campus community who, with direct input and approval from the Director and/or senior level staff, provides programs and services that address cultural issues and identity development, severe mental health issues, as well as problems that are developmental and preventative in nature. This role provides routine clinical services such as initial assessment, individual and group therapy, and case disposition. In consultation with the Director or other senior level staff, the specialist is responsible for crisis intervention; serving in an on‑call rotation; developing, implementing, and evaluating educational and prevention outreach programs; and, in limited circumstances, providing consultation to faculty, staff, students, parents/families, and other mental health/health care providers, and participating in department and college meetings and committees. Essential Functions Provide routine counseling services in individual, group, and couples counseling; initial assessments; and crisis appointments. Use RISD's EMR system to prepare documentation of services provided to be reviewed and approved under supervisory guidance of an independently licensed provider. Ensure record‑keeping and clinical services are in regulatory and ethical compliance and meet accreditation standards. With direct input from and approval by the Director and/or senior level staff, develop, recommend, coordinate, and deliver multicultural outreach programs, services, training, and professional development on behalf of Counseling Services. Collaborate with campus partners to create and align opportunities that deepen awareness and ensure inclusion of minoritized populations. Evaluate the effectiveness of services, outreach, and training in diversity, identity, and inclusion issues. Participate in case conferences, psychiatric case conferences, and staff meetings in Counseling Services. Serve in the on‑call (after hours and weekend) coverage rotation. Provide limited consultation and outreach services to the RISD community. College committee service and other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Demonstrated competency providing clinical services for diverse clients, including international populations and clients across gender and sexual orientation spectra. Experience providing clinical services for a wide range of presenting issues seen in college students, including assessing and managing risk and treating serious concerns with direct support and guidance from senior staff. Appreciation and knowledge of intersecting identities, the process of identity development (intersectional identity development), and how this varies between individuals. Demonstrated ability to actively engage in clinical practice with students in ongoing counseling (individuals, couples, groups), crisis intervention, and outreach programs. Ability to develop and deliver multicultural outreach programs, services, training, and professional development with guidance from the Director and/or senior level staff. Ability to manage a very full caseload within a time‑limited clinical setting. Experience using electronic/medical record systems; must be computer literate. Basic knowledge of college student development theories and practice. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a highly collaborative manner. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Master's degree from an accredited program in counseling, psychology, social work, mental health, or a related field required. Minimum 1 to 8 years of group and individual counseling experience in a supervised practicum, supervised internship, or post‑graduate work setting with demonstrated knowledge and experience working with people from marginalized groups and the issues they face within dominant culture(s) and between cultures required. Licensing: Applicants must be licensed or license‑eligible or actively working toward licensure by the RI DOH. RISD will provide supervision from an independently licensed provider to meet the minimum requirement to apply. Preferred Qualifications Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.). Experience in a college or university counseling center. Familiarity with a variety of cultures (both international and domestic). Training or experience with issues such as racial fatigue, code switching, and impostor syndrome. Clinical experience working with immigrant and/or refugee populations. Passion for and commitment to social justice. Experience providing training and supervision in an APA‑accredited training program. Fluency in multiple languages.
