We’re looking for a Project Transportation Engineer I or II to join our growing team in the Mid-Atlantic, someone who’s excited to work on meaningful transportation projects that reflect our mission and values. This position is part of our full-time, on-site staff augmentation program and will report to an office in Gaithersburg, MD with site visits and fieldwork as required based on project needs.

What You’ll Do
As a Project Engineer at Toole Design, the projects you design will be built. You’ll apply your engineering expertise to deliver multimodal transportation solutions across a wide range of contexts, from urban roadway reconstructions and streetscapes to signature trail projects that enhance suburban and rural environments.

In this role, you will:

• Support client in day-to-day activities, including traffic studies, investigations and determination of the need to install traffic control and traffic control devices
• Contribute to the design of transportation infrastructure projects
• Develop signing and pavement marking plans, maintenance of traffic plans, and traffic signal plans
• Use tools like Synchro, Highway Capacity Software, MicroStation, and AutoCAD for production work
• Contribute to studies such as road diet feasibility, roundabouts, trail/roadway intersections, and parking
• Develop feasibility studies, concept plans, and construction documents
• Collaborate with colleagues and clients to deliver high-quality multimodal transportation outcomes
• Mentor junior staff and support a culture of technical excellence

We are targeting a salary range for this position:

• Project Engineer: $105,000–$115,000 without a PE; $110,000–$125,000 with a PE.
• Project Engineer II: $115,000–$130,000 without a PE; $125,000–$140,000 with a PE.

Candidates with additional years of experience or exceptional qualifications may fall into a different range.

Requirements

What You Bring

• P.E. license (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
• 6+ years of experience (8+ for Project Engineer II)
• Experience developing roadway/highway construction documents
• Experience with signing and pavement marking, including MUTCD standards, as well as familiarity with PROWAG requirements
• Experience in Highway Capacity Software, SIDRA, and/or VISSIM
• Experience with permitting, agency coordination, construction documentation, and cost estimating

Bonus Skills

• Experience with multimodal transportation projects (Complete Streets, bikeway and crossing design) and multidisciplinary coordination (utilities, ROW, signals, etc.)
• Proficiency in MicroStation OpenRoads
• Familiarity with local agencies such as MDOT SHA, VDOT, or DDOT
