Job Summary

Supervise assigned personnel performing custodial work and event set-up. Train subordinates and perform administrative tasks such as recommending budget levels for supplies and equipment, staffing levels, staff training requirements, and department policies and procedures. The supervisor may also perform custodial duties as needed.

Essential Functions
  • Perform all associated duties supervising assigned personnel, including timesheets, leave requests, performance evaluations, hiring and training of new employees, on-going staff training, disciplinary action if applicable and daily oversight of the department.
  • Perform building inspections as needed and provide feedback to the custodians, building occupants and the facilities and operations director.
  • Plan, organize, assign and track projects and cleaning schedules, coordinate projects and schedules with other campus departments and unit heads.
  • Create and maintain PM schedules for carpet and flooring for replacement scheduling.
  • Coordinate event set-ups and take downs, including monitoring the events calendar to ensure all event needs are met.
  • Order supplies, track inventory and develop efficient use and distribution of inventory, repair and replace equipment as required.
  • Ensure all SDS books and the online database is up-to-date and in readily accessible locations for staff.
  • Develop cleaning priorities and work routines for all custodians, including contingencies for absences and disaster clean up; plan daily, weekly, monthly and yearly schedules for assigned personnel.
  • Occasionally drive light trucks, vans and other mobile equipment, run snow removal equipment to include shovels and snow blowers.
  • Occasionally provide weekend coverage for events
  • Ensure that work is done in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ensure that buildings and areas which are not in use, are properly secured; report unauthorized occupants and unusual incidents to security; report unsafe conditions to the safety officer.
  • Perform minor repairs on waterlines, plumbing fixtures, lights; clean clogged drains and sewer lines.
  • Perform routine custodial related tasks as required.
  • Operate floor maintenance equipment including light maintenance and programming of autonomous scrubbers
  • Attend various meetings, trainings and equipment/product demonstrations as well as other professional development events.
  • Use Microsoft Office, CMMS and other computer programs as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a school setting, motel/hotel industry, healthcare of basic cleaning services.
  • Proper knowledge of cleaning chemicals and techniques as well as ability to read and understand SDS information.
  • One year experience supervising or directing others in large-scale housekeeping, janitorial, general or building maintenance or custodial work.
  • Two years' full-time equivalent experience in custodial work.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English.
  • Or, if you do not meet one or more of qualifications listed above but have an applicable combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Custodial experience with large institution custodial standards and requirements.
  • Self-discipline and self-motivation.
  • Ability to work with college staff in a pleasant and productive manner.
  • Possess a basic understanding of computer skills, particularly word processing and e-mail.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Terms of Employment:

The current vacancy is a full-time, overtime and benefit eligible position expected to begin as soon as possible. The starting salary hiring range is $43,836 annually ($20.99 per hour) to $49,296 annually ($23.61 per hour), with periodic increases and earning potential to $58,392 annually ($27.97 per hour), plus shift differential pay of $435 per month. Hours and days may change depending on the needs of the college. The list established by this recruitment will be active for a minimum of three months and be used to fill this position only.

Conditions of Employment:

Work Schedule & Environment:

  • Work hours are generally 2 PM to 10:30 PM, Monday through Friday; hours and days may change depending on the needs of the college.
  • Regular and consistent attendance required.

Physical Work Environment:

This position may have contact with college staff, students and the general public. Most work is performed inside buildings, but some movement between buildings is expected. It is essential to have the physical ability to stand and walk on a consistent basis; lift, push, pull up to 50 lbs.; climb ladders, bend, squat, reach; twist hands, wrists, shoulders, waist, and hips and perform repetitive movements. Must have good hand dexterity, including grasping, holding and related movements. Must have good vision, which includes depth perception and field of vision. Must be able to follow and receive direction and instructions and receive supervision. Must have good cognitive skills that include short- and long-term memory, attention to detail, abstract reasoning and decision making. In addition, the person must have the physical ability to deal with environmental stresses, emergency situations, deadlines, working alone and a variety of other duties. Must be able to work with the following conditions: wet floors, dust, fumes, odors, working outside, working inside, handling chemicals and cleaning agents.

Furthermore, the person must have the ability to wear safety equipment which includes chemical protection goggles, safety glasses, face shields, dust masks, ear plugs, earmuffs, hard hats, back support belt/brace, waist support, elbow support, knee pads, gloves, protective clothing, rain gear and protective footwear.

This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by the Washington Public Employees Association.
