Structural Steel Welder

Responsibilities

• Review fabrication drawings, work orders, weld symbols, and welding procedures before starting each job to ensure a clear understanding of requirements.
• Set up welding equipment properly, verify correct materials, and confirm joint fit-up and alignment prior to welding.
• Perform structural welds on carbon steel components using MIG and flux-cored welding processes on beams, columns, base plates, stiffeners, clips, and connection assemblies in multiple positions.
• Control weld penetration, bead profile, and heat input to minimize distortion and maintain structural integrity.
• Clean welds, remove slag, and perform basic grinding or touch-up work as needed to meet quality and appearance standards.
• Self-inspect completed welds for quality, appearance, and compliance with applicable codes, specifications, and shop standards.
• Coordinate with fitters, supervisors, and quality personnel to resolve fit-up, alignment, or weld-related issues in a timely manner.
• Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to hot-work practices in the welding shop.
• Prepare completed assemblies for inspection, coating, or shipment by ensuring they are properly finished and staged.
• Use shop tools such as wire-feed welding guns, torches, grinders, and magnetic drills safely and effectively during fabrication tasks.
• Participate in weld testing using Hobart 777 weld wire and mixed gas, assembling and welding test pieces to AWS D1.1 standards in specified positions within allotted time.

Essential Skills

• At least 2 years of recent welding experience, preferably in a structural steel or weld shop environment.
• Hands-on experience welding structural carbon steel components using MIG and flux-cored processes.
• Ability to perform welds in multiple positions, including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.
• Consistent control of bead profile, penetration, and fusion to produce sound, reliable welds.
• Demonstrated ability to produce repeatable, code-compliant welds in a production setting.
• Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and weld symbols accurately.
• Understanding of joint types, weld sizes, and connection details commonly used in structural steel fabrication.
• Ability to visualize how individual welds and components fit into the complete structural assembly.
• Skill in identifying potential fit-up or weld issues early and taking corrective action to avoid rework.
• Comfort following written work instructions and welding procedures, including those aligned with AWS D1.1 standards.
• Proficiency with fabrication tasks such as fitting, tacking, and assembling structural components prior to welding.
• Ability to use basic measurement and inspection tools such as tape measures, squares, and weld gauges.
• Strong awareness of safety practices in a welding and fabrication environment, including proper PPE use.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a structural steel fabrication shop producing beams, columns, and connection assemblies.
• Familiarity with flux-core and MIG welding in a high-production environment.
• Experience using shop tools such as grinders, torches, magnetic drills, and wire-feed welding equipment.
• Exposure to welding and fabrication work performed to AWS D1.1 or similar structural welding codes.
• Ability to complete timed weld tests using Hobart 777 weld wire with mixed gas (75/25) in 1F and 3F positions.
• Preparedness to bring and use personal tools such as a tape measure, square, and weld gauges for daily work and testing.
• Strong attention to detail, craftsmanship, and pride in producing high-quality structural steel assemblies.
• Ability to work collaboratively with fitters, supervisors, and quality personnel in a team-driven shop environment.

Work Environment

The role is based in a non-climate-controlled fabrication and welding shop focused on structural steel production. The standard schedule runs from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some Saturdays as needed to support project demands. You will work around heavy steel components, welding equipment, and fabrication tools such as wire-feed guns, torches, grinders, and magnetic drills. Personal protective equipment is required at all times, including steel-toe footwear, hard hat, safety glasses, and gloves. Weld testing is conducted in the shop using Hobart 777 weld wire with a 75/25 mixed gas in 1/16-inch diameter, with test assemblies completed to AWS D1.1 standards in timed conditions. Basic hand tools such as a tape measure, square, and weld gauges are required, while additional tools may be provided as needed to support your work.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $32.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
