The SPCA of Brazoria County is seeking a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) to join our veterinary team and provide high-quality shelter medicine for animals in our care.

This position works closely with the Medical Director and veterinary team to support the health and well-being of shelter animals through preventative care, medical treatment, surgery preparation, monitoring, diagnostics, and daily medical operations.

The ideal candidate is compassionate, organized, dependable, comfortable working in a shelter environment, and passionate about improving animal welfare through accessible, practical veterinary care.

• Provide daily veterinary nursing care for shelter animals.

• Assist veterinarians with examinations, diagnostics, treatments, and medical procedures.

• Prepare animals for surgery and assist with surgical procedures as directed.

• Monitor animals before, during, and after anesthesia and surgery.

• Administer medications, vaccines, fluids, and other treatments as prescribed.

• Perform routine medical procedures within the scope of veterinary technician practice.

• Collect and process laboratory samples and assist with diagnostic testing.

• Maintain accurate medical records and treatment documentation.

• Monitor animals for illness, injury, pain, behavioral changes, and other medical concerns.

• Communicate medical concerns promptly to the Medical Director or veterinary team.

• Assist with infectious-disease prevention, isolation, sanitation, and shelter biosecurity.

• Support spay/neuter and other shelter-medicine procedures.

• Assist with intake examinations, vaccination protocols, and preventative medicine.

• Help maintain appropriate medical supplies, equipment, medications, and treatment areas.

• Follow established veterinary protocols and shelter SOPs.

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized medical work environment.

• Work collaboratively with animal care and shelter staff to ensure animals receive appropriate care.

• Provide compassionate handling and low-stress care whenever possible.

• Assist with emergency and urgent medical situations as directed by the veterinary team.

• Participate in shelter-medicine programs and initiatives designed to improve animal health and lifesaving.

• Maintain appropriate confidentiality and professional standards.

• Perform other veterinary-support duties as assigned by the Medical Director or Executive Director.

Required:

• Current Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT/LVT/RVT) credential recognized in Texas.

• Veterinary technician education from an accredited program.

• Ability to safely handle dogs and cats in a shelter environment.

• Strong knowledge of veterinary nursing principles.

• Ability to work independently while following veterinary protocols.

• Strong communication and organizational skills.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

• Ability to work compassionately with animals experiencing stress, illness, or injury.

Preferred:

• Previous shelter-medicine experience.

• Experience with high-volume spay/neuter.

• Experience with anesthesia monitoring.

• Experience working with shelter or rescue organizations.

• Experience with infectious-disease control and shelter biosecurity.

• Fear Free or low-stress handling experience.

• Experience working with both dogs and cats.
