Medical Interpreter

Position Medical Interpreter – Boston Medical Center South Schedule 40 Hours, Days/Evenings (11:30 AM-8:00 PM)/Rotating weekends (8:00 AM-4:30 PM). Full Time, Benefit Eligible. Responsibilities Serve as a medical interpreter for patients and staff under direction of Manager of Interpreter Services. Conduct consecutive, simultaneous, or sight translation for all patients and family members who are LEP, Deaf, or hard of hearing. Relay medical information between speakers of different languages while maintaining patient confidentiality and informed consent. Meet competencies listed in IMIA Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics. Support department operations and assist with compliance to office and hospital policies. Qualifications Fluency in English and one or more foreign languages; primary requirement Cape Verdean Creole/Portuguese, Spanish preferred. Ability to work in consecutive mode and sight translate into and from the two working languages. High level of customer service and positive approach. Familiarity with cultural and socio‑economic diversity of patients. High school diploma or GED; bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred. Proof of medical interpreter training – minimum 40 hours. At least 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter with strong medical vocabulary. National Board Certification for spoken language interpreters within 6 months of hire (certifiedmedicalinterpreters.org). Working knowledge of computer systems. Compensation & Benefits Salary range: $20.65–$30.68 per hour. Compensation considered based on education, experience, and licensure.
