Overview

FLSA: Non-Exempt. The Fleet Support Technician is a position within the County Highway Department responsible for supporting the maintenance, reliability, and daily operation of the county’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. This role provides hands on technical assistance, parts support, and operational coordination to ensure that vehicles, heavy equipment, and specialized machinery remain in safe, dependable working conditions.

The Fleet Support Technician assists mechanics and supervisors by performing minor repairs, assembling and preparing equipment components, maintaining organized inventory levels, and ensuring accurate documentation within the fleet management system. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to read and interpret parts manuals and equipment specifications, competency with computerized inventory and recordkeeping systems, and effective communication skills when working with shop staff, vendors, and field personnel.

This role plays a vital part in keeping fleet operations running smoothly by supporting equipment setup and repairs, material management, shop organization, and radio or electronic equipment programming. The Technician works under general supervision, exercises independent judgment, follows all safety standards and departmental procedures, and provides courteous, cooperative service in all public and interdepartmental interactions.

Essential Job Functions

Maintain accurate inventory of fleet parts, supplies, and consumables to support daily shop operations.

Receive, inspect, and organize incoming parts; verify quantities and quality against purchase documents.

Issue parts to mechanics and document usage in the fleet management software.

Track stock levels and reorder when required.

Oversee annual EOY shop inventory process

Participate in the RFP process for the procurement of, but not limited to plow blades, diesel fuel and gasoline, crack sealing material, sand, and chip sealing oils

Assist mechanics with routine maintenance and repairs on vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment.

Perform basic diagnostic support, including identifying worn components, preparing equipment for repair, and completing adjustments.

Assemble and prepare components such as hydraulic hoses, fittings, and attachments needed for repairs and maintenance tasks.

Operate shop tools and equipment safely, including sharpening tools, servicing small equipment, and preparing parts for installation and installing them.

Enter and update maintenance records, parts usage, labor hours, and equipment service history in computerized fleet management systems.

Prepare basic reports as directed, including equipment service logs, cost data, and inventory updates.

Maintain organized files, manuals, and digital records for fleet equipment.

Program mobile and handheld radios, electronic light bar modules, and related equipment used by fleet personnel.

Assist with equipment setup for seasonal operations (e.g., plow installation, mowing attachments).

Communicate effectively with mechanics, supervisors, vendors, and field staff to coordinate repairs and part needs.

Operate two way radios to relay information accurately and promptly.

Maintain courteous, respectful interactions with coworkers, vendors, public officials, and community members.

Follow all safety procedures, report hazards, and maintain a clean, organized workspace.

Assist in maintaining shop cleanliness, tool organization, and safe storage of materials.

Demonstrate reliable attendance and perform duties with professionalism in a public service environment.

Physical Demands: Walks and stands approximately 5 hours out of an 8 hour shift; moves 50 lb. boxes and materials off cart and onto shelves of various levels, using bending, stooping and squatting to within 8 inches of floor while lifting; pushes and pulls heavy cart. 35% of time sits at desk, uses hearing, near vision and fingering for computer input, calculators or other office machines. Frequently uses verbal communication with employees. Sits, stands, bends, reaches, and moves about the office intermittently throughout the day. Handles papers and manuals, etc., lift files, copy paper and other office materials. Drives vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of fleet maintenance practices, including basic diagnostics and minor repair procedures for vehicles and heavy equipment.

Understanding of parts identification, equipment components, and the operation of small tools, hydraulic systems, and shop machinery.

Knowledge of inventory control methods, stock tracking, and requisition/purchasing procedures.

Familiarity with computerized fleet management and inventory software systems.

Working knowledge of safety practices, shop safety standards, and safe operation of tools and equipment.

Understanding of two-way radio systems, electronic lightbar modules, and basic programming functions.

Skill in assembling and preparing components such as hydraulic hoses, fittings, and attachments.

Skill in performing mechanical repairs, adjustments, and equipment setup.

Strong organizational skills for managing inventory, tracking supplies, and maintaining records.

Skill in reading and interpreting parts manuals, schematics, diagnostic tools, and equipment specifications.

Competence in using computers for data entry, recordkeeping, and inventory management.

Effective communication skills, both in person and over two way radio systems.

Skill in safely operating shop tools, sharpening equipment, and small machinery.

On call status may be either in the shop rotation or on the snowplow callout list depending on the needs of the department. This will be determined by the Highway Commissioner.

Ability to identify worn or faulty equipment components and recognize basic maintenance needs.

Ability to maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and enter data into digital systems with a high degree of accuracy.

Ability to work collaboratively with mechanics, supervisors, vendors, and field personnel.

Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and respond efficiently to changing operational needs.

Ability to follow detailed procedures, safety protocols, and departmental standards.

Ability to lift, move, and handle materials and tools required for fleet maintenance work.

Ability to remain courteous, respectful, and professional in all public service interactions.

Training, Experience and Other Requirements

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED.

Vocational or technical training in automotive technology, diesel mechanics, equipment repair, or a related field preferred.

Training or coursework in inventory management, fleet maintenance, or equipment operations is beneficial.

Two (2) years of experience in vehicle or equipment maintenance, fleet support work, or shop operations.

Experience with computerized inventory systems or fleet management software is preferred.

Experience assembling hydraulic hoses, using shop tools, and performing mechanical repairs desirable.

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Valid driver’s license required.

A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A is preferred; ability to obtain a class A CDL within 6 months is required.

Industry certifications (such as ASE) in parts handling, automotive service, or equipment maintenance are beneficial but not mandatory.

Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening in accordance with CDL or county requirements.

Must maintain a good driving record throughout employment.

Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including lifting 50 lbs., bending, standing, and operating equipment safely.

Must demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and willingness to work in a public service environment.

Ability to work independently, follow safety procedures, and adapt to changing operational needs.
