About the Role
The Company is seeking a General Counsel to lead its in-house legal office and provide strategic legal guidance to the organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for advising on a wide range of legal matters, including but not limited to, labor, governance, and policy shaping in the higher education sector. This role requires a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school, a member of the Massachusetts Bar or eligible to become a member, and a minimum of 15 years of progressive legal experience, with a focus on higher education or public-sector law. The General Counsel will also be tasked with leading and developing a team of attorneys, overseeing legal operations, and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Applicants for the General Counsel position at the company should have a strong background in legal leadership, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to build collaborative relationships. The role demands a candidate with a deep understanding of legal issues in higher education, particularly in the areas of employment and labor law, collective bargaining, and federal higher education policy. Experience in a union environment and a proven track record of supervising and developing legal professionals are essential. The ideal candidate will be adept at managing complex legal issues, exercising sound judgment, and fostering an environment that values diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.
