Role Summary

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Level III) & Transitional Nursery is a dedicated Night Shift Leadership role supporting clinical and operational oversight within the Women & Infant Services Department. The Level III NICU provides specialized care for premature and critically ill newborns requiring advanced monitoring and intervention.

As the primary nursing leadership presence during night operations, the ANM supports complex neonatal care coordination, high-risk deliveries, interdisciplinary collaboration, and adherence to evidence-based neonatal and perinatal standards. This role ensures staffing optimization, regulatory compliance, and operational stability across the NICU and Transitional Nursery.

In the absence of the Nurse Manager, the ANM serves in a leadership capacity to ensure continuity of care, staff accountability, and execution of safe and effective patient-centered care.

What You’ll Do

• Provide onsite night shift leadership and oversight for Level III NICU and Transitional Nursery operations.
• Align staffing and assignments to neonatal acuity, census fluctuations, and high-risk delivery volume.
• Supervise, coach, and mentor nursing staff; assist with performance evaluations and improvement plans.
• Support recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of neonatal nursing staff.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and neonatal care guidelines.
• Promote evidence-based neonatal and perinatal nursing practice.
• Support quality initiatives related to neonatal outcomes, infection prevention, thermoregulation, and safe sleep practices.
• Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatricians, OB providers, respiratory therapy, lactation consultants, and ancillary teams.
• Address operational or clinical issues that may impact the safe delivery of neonatal care in real time.
• Report and escalate significant events, near misses, and patient/family concerns in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications

• Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred; must obtain BSN within three (3) years of assuming ANM position if not already obtained.
• Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia.
• Minimum two (2) years clinical experience in Neonatal Intensive Care or related perinatal specialty preferred.
• Experience caring for high-risk neonates strongly preferred.
• Minimum one (1) year supervisory or leadership experience required.
• Current BLS certification required.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required.
• National specialty certification (e.g., RNC-NIC, CCRN-Neonatal, or equivalent neonatal certification) within one (1) year of hire.
• Strong knowledge of neonatal physiology, thermoregulation, infection prevention, safe sleep, and developmental care principles.
• Demonstrated leadership, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution skills.

Pay + Schedule

Pay Range: $84,680 – $135,488 annually
FLSA Status: Exempt
Schedule: Night Shift – 7:00 PM to 5:30 AM; 10-hour shifts, Monday through Friday. One weekend per month required.
